My role included; supporting our teams in country, communications and media including design and implementation of our social media strategy, project management, writing up scientific reports of experimental data, fundraising- I raised over $9000 in 3 weeks in a crowdfunding campaign, talks and promotion of the team, and logistical organisation. I assisted with report writing, IT, risk assessments, indents, management of the bond, and was available for discussions on all base matters. I spent 13 months working at King Edward Point Research Station, South Georgia. I was responsible for monitoring the population size and reproductive success of gentoo penguins, Antarctic fur seals, and giant petrels. I also did year round dietary analysis of fur seal diet, so I'm experienced in Southern Ocean otolith ID. I assisted the fisheries assistant by conducting dietary analysis of both icefish and tooth fish stomachs. I undertook monthly absolute measurements for the British Geological Survey using a fluxgate sensor mounted on a theodolite. Regularly gave science talks to visitors to the island, including; cruise ship passengers, military personnel, VIPs and expedition visitors. Besides my biological work I was also trained to act as both crew and cox on both jet boats and RIBs. Collecting information on breeding success, population size, chick diet, and chick growth of tufted puffins and fork-tailed storm-petrels. Surveyed monitoring plots nest-by-nest, collected diet samples using a variety of methods including mistnetting, and took chick biometrics. Some boating and observation of cliff-nesting murres and kittiwakes.

Bird Island, South Georgia, Antarctica

As a zoological field assistant I was responsible for monitoring the populations of wandering albatross, grey-headed albatross, black-browed albatross and light-mantled sooty albatross resident on Bird Island, South Georgia. I spent 16 months living and working on Bird Island, a small remote island off the coast of South Georgia. My role involved; monitoring nesting of all wandering albatross on the island as well as specific colonies of the other albatross species, bird ringing… Show more As a zoological field assistant I was responsible for monitoring the populations of wandering albatross, grey-headed albatross, black-browed albatross and light-mantled sooty albatross resident on Bird Island, South Georgia. I spent 16 months living and working on Bird Island, a small remote island off the coast of South Georgia. My role involved; monitoring nesting of all wandering albatross on the island as well as specific colonies of the other albatross species, bird ringing, fitting birds with GLS trackers, weighing chicks, diet sampling and identification of krill, otoliths and squid beaks. I also assisted in work on gentoo and macaroni penguins conducting counts, weighing birds, pit tagging, diet sampling and maintaining and calibrating the penguin weighbridge . Non bird work on the island involved monitoring the population of Antarctic fur seals in which I assisted weighing pups and flipper tagging.During the summer season there was up to ten personnel on the island but over winter there were only four for a period of eight months. This provided me with great experience of lone working in an extremely remote environment. Show less
