Mindscape is a full-service company that designs, develops and hosts website and internet-based applications and marketing solutions for companies, organizations, and schools across the United States. we offer our clients a full range of integrated Web PR and Marketing tools to complement their traditional Web application development and design services.Mindscape was affiliated with Hanon-McKendry, a nationally recognized brand consulting and advertising firm. They shared not only office space but a passion for excellent work and effective marketing.

I served on the board of the AdFed, the American Advertising Federation of West Michigan. The AdFed is an industry group serving West Michigan industry professionals who buy, sell, create, or produce services or products related to advertising.

As demand and my schedule permit, I teach a course called Concept Development for the School of Visual Communications at the Kendall School of Design. It's a semester-long course in theory and mechanics of generating creative ideas.

Our job was to communicate. We did it in different ways, depending where and when clients are listening. It could be over the phone, on a billboard, in a radio spot, on the net, or in a TV commercial. Each time, we found the single key selling message that influenced the market and delivered it in the most engaging way possible.To put it in industry terms, we provided brand positioning, marketing strategies, advertising, media planning & buying, website development, event marketing, sales promotions, corporate identity, product identity, and public relations.

I spent just six months working at Gemini, but I learned a ton. I planned printing for a weekly business publication, The Grand Rapids Business Journal, and two monthly magazines, Grand Rapids Magazine and Grand Rapids Parent. I allocated ad space, purchased printing, and supervised the Editorial Designer and Advertising Designer. I reported to the Owner and Publisher.

Horizon owned or operated 40 Outlet Shopping Malls across the country, and as their Creative Supervisor, I oversaw three designers. Together, we created everything from table tents to double trucks. I wrote and produced radio spots, and provided creative direction on all of the advertising, including outdoor, newspaper, and print collateral. Our goal was to provide strong work in a very short time — a good thing, because each year, we produced over a thousand jobs. We even managed to win a few Savvy awards (the “Oscars” of the outlet industry) along the way.

Ninety percent of the time, I wrote radio commercials for scores of businesses. More importantly, I met with 10 account executives, and developed strategies for everything from supermarkets to bait shops. It was extremely hectic. It was also incredibly satisfying.

I wrote and produced radio copy for the Little Red Shoe House (a chain of 120 retail shoe stores) Trendsetter (10 stores) and the Rockford factory outlet mall. When I finished that, I made media buys for forty-odd radio markets. Slightly less fun (but necessary) was verifying all the bills when they rolled in. “What?” you say, “No print?” Actually, between the Little Red Shoe House chain, the Trendsetter chain, and the Rockford Factory Outlet Mall (all owned and operated by WWW retail), I spent plenty of time on print, too. I also designed private label packaging and interior sign packages for the stores. Now and then, I even created outdoor advertising.
