I am Professor Emeritx of Psychology and Women’s Studies at Penn State University-University Park. I am focusing on further development and distribution of WAGES-Academic (http://wages.la.psu.edu/), an interactive in-person simulation that illustrates the nature and cumulative effects of apparently minor biases in the academic workplace. WAGES-Academic was designed for use with U.S. university faculty and administrators. Many colleagues have also used it successfully with graduate students, upper-division undergrads, and working professionals not affiliated with colleges/universities. My research is at the intersection of emotion, gender, and feminist psychology. I study the micropolitics of emotion, the use of one’s own or others’ emotions to assert or challenge status and power. Speaking from the Heart: Gender and the Social Meaning of Emotion (Cambridge, 2002), received the Association for Women in Psychology’s Distinguished Publication Award, as did the special issue of Sex Roles on intersectionality (2009) that I edited. I served as Director of Women’s Studies at Penn State, the University of California, Davis, and president of the Society for the Psychology of Women (SPW). Notable awards include SPW’s Carolyn Sherif Award, the society’s highest award that recognizes research, mentoring, and service relevant to women, and the Society for General Psychology’s (APA Division 1) Ernest Hilgard Lifetime Achievement Award recognizing significant and long-lasting contributions across topical areas in psychology.
