As a postdoctoral researcher at the Université de Montréal’s Groupe Langage, organisation et gouvernance (LOG), I research the links between communication and collaboration in the health care arena. My past and current projects include an examination of interprofessional collaboration in family health care clinics in Quebec and of the team communication dynamics of four acute care teams in a teaching hospital in the Vancouver area.

COM 7815: Communication organisationnelle et santéThis master’s course leads students to consider the theoretical approaches to analyzing organizational communication in relation to the health care sector. Participants are introduced to different ways of conceptualizing health and organizing, to explore such topics as professional identity in the era of the patient-partner, collaboration and coordination within and across organizations, and sensemaking as an organizational process.I co-taught this seminar course with Prof. Consuelo Vasquez. In this course, I was responsible for: designing 4 day-long seminars, including identifying themes and reading materials; lecturing; organizing guest speakers; moderating debates; facilitating data analysis sessions; designing evaluation criteria; and evaluating student work. CMNS 130 Online Course: Communication and Social ChangeThis undergraduate course introduces students to broad topics in mass communication, focusing on the Canadian context. From past and current media policy to various theories of mass communication, the course encourages students to think in new ways about how they engage with the mediated world. In this online course, I was the sole university contact for students. In the course of my work, I coached many first year and ESL students in essay writing and saw a marked improvement in their work over the semester, evaluated all student work, and clarified and explained course material through the on-line platform. My teaching received excellent student evaluations.

A journal of the International Communication Association, Communication Theory is a forum publishing top quality and original research in the development of conceptual approaches in the field of communication. Through my work with CT, I was responsible for: helping transition to a new on-line platform; liaising with reviewers, authors, and the publisher to ensure timely turnaround for production deadlines; proofreading every article prior to publication.

Knockout Communications specializes in strategic communications for organizations in the non-profit and academic sectors. I replaced the Director of Communications at Les Amis de la montagne, a non-profit devoted to promoting and protecting Mount Royal.Among other things, I was responsible for representing the organization in the media, including publicizing community outreach events and supporting the President in media-related activities. I also took part in promoting and implementing Les Tuques Bleues, Les amis’ signature fundraising event and snowshoe race.

I was part of a small team of dedicated non-profit experts who planted the seeds that turned a vision of the new MUHC facility on the Glen site into reality. I was involved in community outreach and public relations. Through my work, I served as a project coordinator for all published materials, including a quarterly magazine, monthly newsletters, and weekly radio spots promoting the then newly merged hospital. I helped organize major fundraising events, including an old-fashioned “Walkabout at the Glen” to generate enthusiasm for the new project, and the Healing Gardens gala and silent auction that raised resources to beautify the hospital sites.
