About Stephanie Howarth

In 2004 I graduated from Plymouth University with a Bsc (Hons) in Psychology and then qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist through the London College of Clinical Hypnosis. I practised as a therapist for several years and in 2011 I returned to academia to start my PhD in Cognitive Psychology at Plymouth University. My thesis explored Dual Processing and Belief-Bias effect in conditional reasoning. My research focused on the impact of cognitive load, individual differences and the role of inhibition and working memory on conditional reasoning. I evaluated my findings against traditional and newer dual processing models of reasoning. In April 2015 I joined the Collaboration for the Advancement of Medical Education Research & Assessment (CAMERA) at Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. I conducted both qualitative and quantitative research on the UMbRELLA (UK Medical Revalidation Evaluation collaboration) project, with a focus on the decision-making processes of senior management. The team was led by Dr Julian Archer MD and I worked closely with the Psychometrics department. I currently work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Macquarie University continuing my research in thinking, reasoning and decision making. Specifically, I investigate the boundaries of logical intuition, the impact of hypnosis on logic and belief evaluation and the effect of non-invasive brain stimulation on human reasoning. Others research projects include; moral engagement in video games, transliminality, training and uncertainty.

fMRI Research: 2013 This research was investigating Dual Processes in reasoning through neuropsychological examination of the working memory. My role involved administering the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale as well as some minor training on the MRI machine and Matlab programme. Developmental research: 2011 Here we were exploring mood and problem solving among typically developing children and children with autism. The role required the administration of the WISC IV and a reasoning questionnaire consisting of contrary to fact and counter factual statements and subsequent analysis for the preliminary data. Placebo Research: 2011 This research explored the response expectancy theory and investigated whether belief in the instructions given has any effect on the speed of the participant’s reactions. The second part of the project investigated the theory that expectancy is mediated via a computational network which integrates information; this suggests that the placebo response should perseverate for a second or more after the participants have been told they have been misled.
