Phd Candidate
PhD candidate in the Department of Human Genetics, in the labs of Dr. Aaron Quinlan and Dr. Christopher Gregg. Primary thesis work involves developing computational tools and statistical models to identify random monoallelic expression from bulk RNAseq data. Additional projects include single-cell RNA-seq to understand allele-specific gene regulation with tissue- and cell-type specificity to elucidate genotype to phenotype relationships in neuropsychiatric diseases.
Graduate Summer Intern - Computational Biology
I was one of 4 students selected to participate in a summer internship with the computational biology group at 10X Genomics. My project involved optimizing ATAC-seq peak calling methods for the first commercially available single cell multi-omics platform; Single Cell Multiome ATAC + Gene Expression. I attended and presented in weekly group meetings for the multi-omics platform, and gave a final presentation of my work to the entire division at the end of the summer internship.
Research Associate
• Organized, managed, and prepared samples for next-gen whole genome and RNA-sequencing in a large autism cohort (10,000 samples).• Detected and validated large de novo deletions and duplications in >4000 autism patients (co-authored paper resulting from this work in submission to Neuron).• Assisted with development and execution of sequencing analysis pipeline of 5000 whole genomes.
Independent Research- Zebrafish Neurodevelopment And Fecundity
Independent research project analyzing the effect of probiotics (L. rhamnosus) on zebrafish fecundity and development. I designed the project and protocols, and am undergoing tests trials on probiotic administration and subsequent developmental effects.
Biology Office Assistant
As a Biology Office Assistant at Carleton College, I do general office work such as creating posters, organizing information boards, editing the website, and assisting the professors in any way related to their classes.
Greenhouse And Animal Colony Assistant
As a Greenhouse and Animal Colony assistant, I am responsible for Carleton's greenhouse plant populations used for research and labs, as well as the animal populations including several fish species, frogs, mice, and lizards. I have conducted numerous soil composition experiments, constructed hydroponic systems, and zebrafish fecundity and nutrition trials.
Research Assistant- Chamaecrista Fasciculata Genomics
As a research assistant in the Singer Lab, our work with Chamaecrista utilizes whole transcriptome analysis of developmentally sequenced shoot, root, and nodule tissue. Along with colleagues Jeff Doyle (Cornell), Greg May (NCGR), and Steven Cannon (Iowa State), we are using comparative genomics to understand the evolution of flowering in the legumes as well as the evolution of nodulation and polyploidy. Currently we are looking at 30 Chamaecrista ecotypes to investigate genetic variation contributing to variation in flowering time. My research is a diverse mixture of field, molecular, GIS, and Geoeye imaging analysis.
Research Intern- Psychiatric Genetics
• The mission of PNGU is to identify and characterize the genetic basis of psychiatric, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disorders and translate these discoveries to improvements in clinical care and public health. As a research assistant, I will be collaborating with Dr. Jordan Smoller on his psychiatric genetics studies of mood and anxiety disorders. Assisted with DNA extractions and analysis, development of a telomere length assay using qPCR, clinical recruiting and data management, and assisting with the literature review and writing process of an article summarizing current depression genetics literature. Review article in prep for Harvard Review of Psychiatry.
Research Intern
• The STPGRC is currently comprised of faculty researchers and fellows who focus on the understanding of the genetic and environmental factors contributing to the development of mental illnesses. As an intern, I contributed to an ongoing longitudinal study examining the genetic relationship of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in Hispanic populations in San Antonio, TX. Responsibilities included administering neurocognitive batteries and clinical assessments to subjects and attending to office work and case analysis. Over the course of the summer I saw around 3 subjects per week for up to 8-hour sessions of independent interviews and examination.
Field Manager
My responsibilities working for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals included educating about animal abuse, fundraising, managing, C-3 non-profit paper work, and training new employees. In the summer of 2010, I individually raised nearly $10,000 for the organization.
