With hindsight being 20/20, it is clear that language, belonging, and identity were an essential themes woven throughout my university education and volunteer experience, and they have continued to be a linchpin in my current clinical practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist.It was in my undergraduate research that I first discovered the power of language. This beautiful quote by Ursula K. Le Guin sums up my undergraduate thesis: “Sound is dynamic. Speech is dynamic; it is action. To act is to take power, to have power, to be powerful. Mutual communication between speakers and listeners is a powerful act.” I did not understand until later that access to language is certainly political but, at its heart, it is personal.After graduating with my BA in English Literature, I taught English as a Second language at Global Village Calgary. But there was still something missing and I understood that what I really wanted was to help people speak for themselves, by themselves in a way that would increase their quality of life. It was here where the pieces started to come together and I realized that Speech-Language Pathology was the culmination of my interests and experiences.I am particularly interested in the services that multilingual clients receive in Speech-Language therapy. My masters thesis examined how accent and comprehensibility may affect SLP perceptual assessments in bilingual children. I am interested in pinpointing barriers to service for multilingual clients and helping grow the evidence base for effective care. I aim to bridge the gap between the client and service delivery, whether that be linguistic or cultural, so that I can help these individuals unlock the power of “mutual communication.”
