Address a myriad of issues related to organic waste management critical to mitigating climate change and preserving California's urban and agricultural natural resources. As the initial Advisor in this area, I created an innovative extension education and applied research program centered on issues related to the diversion of organic waste from landfills into alternative end markets. Research and extension focus on topics such as the use of organic materials as soil amendments, land cover applications of both compost and biosolids, innovative processing technologies, adoption of management practices (i.e. behavior changes), identification and management of chemical contaminants in organic wastes, and innovative markets for diverted and processed organic waste products.• Foster partnerships with individual municipalities, counties, and members of the waste management community to bridge the gap between regulations and best available science in waste management.• Conduct scientific research to address new potential contaminants in soil amendments, including compost, biosolids, and biochar (under development); and cost benefit analysis on compost production and application on urban small farms (under development).• Develop educational materials on residential waste sorting, along with monitoring and evaluation tools to track behavior change (under development).• Partner with UC Cooperative Extension statewide programs such as Master Gardeners, Master Food Preservers, and Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program to disseminate education and awareness on food waste prevention and reduction methods (under development).

Advance the goals of the Building Resilience Environmental Health Capacity (BREHC) program within the Occupational & Environmental Epidemiology Branch (OEEB) of the NC Dept. of Health & Human Services (NC DHHS) to improve state capacity to identify, detect, and prevent exposure to environmental hazards, and fortify environmental health resilience in response to natural disasters. UNC MPH Practicum:• Produce and disseminate an online qualitative survey in partnership with Children’s Environmental Health that assessed post-disaster sanitation evaluation protocols used statewide at child care centers.• Devise a statewide standardized assessment tool that highlights key sanitation and hygiene concerns for Environmental Health Specialists when evaluating child care centers after a disaster, and aids local health departments in post-disaster response and data collection.UNC MPH Technical Report & MCRP Master's Project:• Evaluate the potential impacts of hurricanes on septic systems by geolocating malfunctioning septic systems reported to local health departments and overlaying 2018-2019 declared disaster zones.• Estimate potential risk of private well water and/or groundwater contamination due to malfunctioning septic systems through spatial analysis of well water and malfunctioning septic system data.
