Currently, I am a PhD in chemistry in the lab of Prof. Danna Freedman. I create novel magnetic materials using highly tunable metal-organic framework approaches and interrogate their magnetic and physical properties. At the moment, I am writing up the results of two of my projects. In the lab, I manage a physical properties measurement system, and I trained two other PhD students to take over this management when I graduate. Additionally, I foster a collaborative environment through mentoring coworkers, performing instrument trainings, and teaching a lab lecture on magnetism.
I started my graduate career at Northwestern University in the lab of Prof. Danna Freedman. Here, I worked on synthesizing naturally occurring materials with exotic magnetic properties. When Prof. Freedman accepted a position at MIT, I helped prepare our lab for the upcoming cross-country move.
I taught two weekly recitation sections for introductory undergraduate chemistry students at Northwestern. In these sessions, I worked with my students to tackle their homework and class problems in creative and exciting ways. In Accelerated General Chemistry 1, my students nominated me for the highly competitive L. Carroll King Award for Excellence in 100-Level Teaching, which I won.
I taught two weekly lab classes and provided biweekly office hours for introductory undergraduate chemistry students at Northwestern. For my classes, I would start with a weekly chemistry or science joke to lighten the mood and would excitedly engage with my students to stimulate their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. One of my students asked me to write a recommendation letter for them for a competitive fellowship, which they were awarded.
At Earlham College, I held weekly tutoring sessions across a wide range of chemistry disciplines. During these sessions, I instructed students in one-on-one and small group settings. In General Chemistry (1 and 2) and Inorganic Chemistry, my tutoring sessions were in high demand, and I spent approximately 10 hours a week tutoring for these courses.
During my time at Earlham, I was a teaching assistant for four classes across chemistry disciplines. In General Chemistry (1 and 2) and Analytical Chemistry, I collaborated with the other teaching assistants to facilitate the lab classes and grade all lab reports. In Inorganic Chemistry, I was the sole teaching assistant and worked closely with the professor to make the class successful. As a result, I led lecture and lab classes when the professor was unavailable.
I taught a weekly review course for introductory chemistry students at Earlham who underperformed on the placement exam. Here, I had the opportunity to design my own lecture materials to supplement the course content and the flexibility to structure the review in whatever way I saw fit. I received effusive thank-you notes from students, some of whom I stayed in contact with after the course ended.
As part of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, I worked in the lab of Prof. Debbie Crans. I developed and characterized a series of vanadium(V) catecholate-based complexes in model membrane systems for improved efficacy against bone cancer. This work resulted in co-authorship on a peer-reviewed publication.
