Growing up I thought I was going to be an author, writing world famous novels. I had no idea the writing I would be doing would be in documents that help cities chart a path to a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible future. When it came time to pick a college path, I chose architecture instead of English because I hoped it would support my passion for historic buildings. Despite growing up in the suburbs, I loved the old buildings I saw in books, on television shows, and when I had the chance to go downtown to the Historic Haymarket district. While I did not become a licensed architect, I become in my opinion something even better, an architectural historian and urban planner. I get to tell the stories of the old buildings, helping to save them by keeping their history alive and seeing that they fit into the larger plan for their community.I enjoy helping cities look into their past and their future. I work with communities of all sizes survey and designating historic districts and properties as well as envisioning what they want to be in 20 years and identifying how they can get there. I engage residents and stakeholders, work with city staff, conduct research, hold implementation workshops, and design final documents for communities across the Midwest. I am a data driven and analytical person which is why my favorite part of each project is collecting the data and doing the research. A good understand of the past and current conditions are essential for creating a solid and visionary plan for the future. When I am not helping cities plan their future or research their past I am learning how to be more sustainable and sharing my research with others. Through my blog, The Planning Lady, I research planning related topics and sustainable alternatives like how to eliminate single use plastics or set up a compost bin. I believe sustainability should be at the heart of every decision, whether it is saving historic buildings, reducing plastic consumption, or supporting active transportation options. There are so many small actions that lead to massive changes and support a healthy environment for the next generation.
