Lead Software EngineerState Farm Dec 2021 - Mar 2024Bloomington, Illinois, UsI worked on the Application Security Engineering team where I was a product owner over Education. I primarily been worked with the Secure Code Warrior (SCW) vendor to offer hands-on, gamified experience to developers in a variety of languages & frameworks. The goal was to give our employees the skills and tools to write secure code from the start, while making the learning process enjoyable. Along with this work, I spent a lot of time in the SCW platform myself - doing training exercises in languages like JavaScript Node.js Express, Java Spring, & Docker, competing in tournaments, & creating content for users like courses/assessments based on company & industry vulnerability trends. I also spent time developing a corresponding API & UI in JavaScript Node.js Express/React that gathers/displays metrics from SCW that aren't currently available in the platform. Some tools used were: K8S, Docker, HashiCorp Vault, MongoDB, GitLab CI.

Static scanning (Checkmarx) and dependency scanning (Nexus IQ Server) are two main ways to catch security vulnerabilities - we developed tools to make running the scans easier & assisted developers in remediating findings from scans. I also worked to develop an API to gather metrics from Nexus IQ Server that would benefit our organization, such as the number of dependencies in reports with known vulnerabilities that have a newer version available to consume. Some technologies used: Docker, GitLab CI, HashiCorp Vault, JavaScript , Java Spring, K8S.I also began working with the Secure Code Warrior vendor to encourage the use of their platform at State Farm. Security education soon became my main focus.
