About Steph Byrom

Steph is a dedicated professional with over thirteen years of experience in the field of decarbonisation and policy, currently serving as the General Manager of Decarbonisation at Loop. Loop is at the forefront of providing strategic and technical solutions, particularly for the mining industry, where Steph plays a pivotal role in helping clients to operationalise their decarbonisation strategies. Her work involves identifying opportunities for emissions reduction and implementing innovative and cost-effective projects to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. Through her career, Steph has focused on translating strategy related to ESG and decarbonisation into tangible actions. Steph is also pursuing a PhD in Energy Policy at the University of Queensland, where she is developing a comprehensive roadmap for achieving a reliable net-zero future in the Australian National Electricity Market. Her research explores the optimal portfolio of power generation technologies, the potential barriers and constraints to implementation, and the social and political implications of different options. She has published multiple papers on climate and energy topics, and has been a guest lecturer at the university. Steph leverages her academic and professional expertise to provide evidence-based and practical advice on decarbonisation and policy, and to contribute to the global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

This thesis aims to identify an engineering solution to decarbonise the Australian National Electricity Market. This solution will be presented as a portfolio of power generation technologies that should achieve a net zero greenhouse gas emissions electricity sector that is secure and reliable while minimising the total system cost. The thesis will also explore the potential barriers and constraints to implementing this solution in-practice. Given political hurdles and social opposition to certain technologies, like carbon capture and storage and fossil fuels, the achievement of a net zero electricity grid at ‘lowest’ total systems cost is likely to be very challenging. This thesis will synthesise these challenges and work to identify potential pathways forward.
