Assistant Professor in Naturopathic Medicine program.My teaching is focused on the doctor-patient relationship. Empathy and compassion are necessary for accurate and supportive communication with patients. I use methods ranging from classic lecture to readings to reflective writing to improv exercises to cultivate student's communication skills. My current classes include: Advanced Diagnosis, a standardized patient lab for naturopathic and chiropractic students that bridges the gap between classroom and clinic experience; Introduction to Naturopathic Counseling, a first-year class that introduces students to mindful listening, ethics, self-awareness and observation in the patient encounter; Practice Management, a third-year class in which students build a simple website, write articles for the general public on aspects of medicine, and practice other aspects of running a small medical practice; and Doctor-Patient Relationships, a third-year class where students encounter more advanced concepts of communication and ethics.As a faculty member in a growing program, I have taught at all levels, from first-term introductory classes to clinical supervision.
