As a supervisor in the State and Local Tax Department (SALT) at MarksNelson, leadership skills are further sharpened through increased responsibilities and nurturing a consultative-mindset to compliment the compliance-mindset of my previous positions in the department. Responsibilities still include leading engagements, training and supervising staff, assisting with planning and completion of projects, building client relationships, and managing multiple projects with assorted deadlines as required as a Senior Accountant. Additional responsibilities include further research into local tax laws to bring additional savings to our clients, focused attention on areas of potential savings opportunities specific to particular industries, management of the delegation of multiple projects, and development of deeper relationships with both clients and taxing jurisdiction representatives. Building on previously honed skills and adding a new set of skills will bring greater value to our clients and provide a solid foundation for future advancement at the firm.

As a staff accountant in the State and Local Tax Department (SALT) at MarksNelson, research skills have been honed to develop a deep understanding of the complexities of sales and use taxes across multiple states. Understanding these complexities has allowed successful refund requests for several clients and the preparation of multiple taxability matrices to provide clients with the tools they need to avoid overpayment of sales and use tax.Being detail-oriented has proven invaluable in the review and analysis of fixed asset listings in order to prepare business personal property tax returns for many large clients operating in multiple states.

This position was held concurrently with the position at Linn County News. Unique experience was gained in this position. Unlike the previous graphic design positions, as the sole graphic designer, printing orders were managed from the initial order placement to layout and design to preparation of the plates required by the pressman and from completion of the printing and post-print activities (folding, stapling, etc.) to the delivery to the customers. This position also required project management abilities and the required effectively communicating the customer’s needs to the printing department to ensure the finished product met the customer’s specifications. Listening skills, interpretation of customer needs, customer service, and project management are all important skills that have proven most useful as an accountant.

This position was held concurrently with the position at Linn County Printing. The duties of this position were quite similar to those at the previous positions held. One key difference was being the sole graphic designer at this publication. Adaptability and perseverance were key traits enhanced at this position as there was no one upon which to rely for assistance. As the sole graphic designer for this rural newspaper, planning skills were also necessary to avoid being overwhelmed by the special sections (graduation, fall sports, spring sports, local festivals, etc.) that were published as inserts for the normal, weekly edition. One differential in this position was the honor of winning several awards for the newspaper from the Kansas Press Association for creativity in advertising and layout design.Flexibility, perseverance and planning are all valuable skills used daily as an accountant.

This position was very similar to the position held concurrently with the Nevada Daily Mail’s sister paper, Nevada News. In addition to the same skills used at the Nevada News, additional skills were developed when serving as a temporary replacement for vacationing or otherwise absent editorial staff. Proofreading and writing skills were enhanced and are extremely important today in the preparation of client reports, in-house memos and presentations, and persuasive arguments for county and state officials.

Attention to detail was not a mere job skill in this position – it was the key element of the position. Layouts for job printing (brochures, forms, business cards, etc.) had to be accurate to the last point (1/72 of one inch). This attention to detail has proven invaluable in the role as an accountant today.Creativity was also a must as a graphic designer as the Nevada News also published a free, weekly paper. Advertisements created had to be unique, creative, and well-suited to the “personality” of the advertiser’s business. The creativity nurtured in this position has evolved into my current ability to think “out-of-the-box” and evaluate not just the words of state statutes, but the true intent of these statutes.
