§ I currently serve as Librarian for Electronic Reserves and Scholarly Communication at Yeshiva University (national rank #68!). My responsibilities range from e-reserves course page creation and database maintenance to copyright compliance and advisement for scholarly communication. The service enables faculty and students to access vital course material 24/7. Since May 2028, I have been serving as Scholarly Communication Librarian for the Yeshiva University Academic Institutional Repository (YAIR) https://reposity.yu.edu. My responsibilities include: Communication with faculty and students to collect and share intellectual output, to apply publisher policies on IR; to promote and advise open access (OA) and academic social media optimization (ASEO). I also serve as reader for the annual Library research award for both honors and non-honors students.§ Previously I established and maintained print reserves at YU in addition to providing reference support to undergraduate students. Subjects included humanities as well as Hebraica, Judaica, and rabbinics. Before YU, I taught English as a Foreign Language in a number of high schools in the Middle East.§ My professional involvement in libraries and academia goes beyond my assigned tasks at Yeshiva. I am an active member in a number of professional organizations and mentor library school students and recent graduates. I am an enthusiastic champion of professional development and continuing education (PDE) involvement for all information specialists. I embrace social media as a tool to be employed prudently when reaching out to the public, while favoring face-to-face engagement whenever possible.§ My interests in other areas such as literacy, the arts, education, foreign language and travel impact and enhance my professional expertise and scope of reference.

I have used the responsibilities required for my position to explore issues such as copyright, user experience, patron privacy and security and information architecture. I have also refined the quality of citation work per MLA standards, and user experience best practices. An added flourish has been the addition of HTML and Hebrew where appropriate. This past year, Pollack Library was reconfigured into an information commons. This metamorphosis has sparked great interest among library staff, myself included. Under our new library director, Prof. Paul Glassman, we are exploring how we can become an emerging academic nucleus for both students and faculty. Moreover, I've became acquainted with standards of courtesy as well as that of sharing and trust. Through serving on the board, I learned to organize my thoughts and present them to others in a succinct and articulate fashion. I've enjoyed planning events, reaching out to other library students and institutions, and ultimately mentoring and advising Pratt SILS students. As vice-president, and then president, I committed myself to the survival of the club (founded in 1886 by Melvil Dewey). As emotionally demanding as this pro bono work has been for me, the rewards have been phenomenal. For every challenge has come some level of success. In most cases, mentees do find employment in as well as recognition by colleagues. I strive to maintain contact with mentees, as mentoring in the present is more a peer-to-peer experience than days of yore. Mentoring others has helped me clarify my own identity as a librarian. It has also presented me with numerous opportunities to lead from where I am, to share my life experience and expertise, to nurture young people who need words of encouragement. It is probably the most exciting responsibility I have as a librarian.

I cannot imagine my life as a librarian without this life-changing experience. Although I was saddened to see the group close, I maintain close contact with many colleagues. Headed the English Department from 1981-1982.Teaching in the Middle East during my twenties was an experience of a lifetime. I had always wanted to be a teacher, to instruct others in the reading and writing of language. Teaching young Israel, both Jewish and Bedouin (the latter at private, external remedial schools) granted me the opportunity to impart my love of foreign language learning and acquisition. I strove to teach in a manner that promoted risk-taking and confidence building, problem-solving, effective communication and lifelong learning. During my last year in Dimona, I headed the English department. Besides encouraging fellow instructors to maintain standards in matriculation preparation, I strove to guide all in keeping lessons challenging and fun. I look back at those days with tinged regret, having moved on to the field of librarianship. It would not surprise me in the least if I decide to return to English language instruction during retirement.
