Yangon, Myanmar
I primarily worked with the Capacity Development for Education (CapED) and Strengthening pre-Service Education in Myanmar (STEM) teams. With Caped I assisted with the preparations of the Education for Peace and Sustainable Development Seminar for ~70 participants from government, civil society and educational institutions as part of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 Policy Dialogue series. This included drafting invitations, editing the workshop concept note and schedule, drafting talking points for opening remarks and writing the seminar report that was endorsed by the Ministry of Education. Working with STEM project officer and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, I conducted interviews of key project stakeholders, beneficiaries and UNESCO team leads and compiled information for the 2019 STEM Annual Report. For both teams, I Edited formal documents, training materials and social media messages. Additionally, I volunteered my time to the UNESCO Sustainability Committee and UNESCO Center of Excellence for Business Skill Development. On the Sustainability Committee, my team and I created guidelines for sustainable workshops, procurement and office activities. At CEBSD I co-taught English lessons related business issues for college-aged students.

I facilitated the migration of all OIG policy into the new SharePoint framework. This included editing policy to reflect the new system, setting up the framework in SharePoint's back-end and coordinating with different offices to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of policies to minimize the effect on employees day-to-day work. Additionally, I supported E-FOIA officer in conducting a complete review of agency record ownership, retention and destruction schedules. Met with ~50 record owners to verify that records were being kept in accordance with policy, if new records should be added and which records might be obsolete to update the Master Record Plan.

I was chosen for a competitive third-year extension to provide leadership and support to over 100 American volunteers. During this year, I facilitated technical and cross-cultural training sessions in English and Khmer to an average group size of 50 participants. I also conducted 15 site development visits in four provinces with program managers to determine site viability for volunteers. In support of site development, I researched the feasibility of teaching minority languages to future volunteers for placement in provinces with large ethnic minority populations. My favorite project was planning, budgeting, and implementing a one-day workshop sponsored by the U.S. Embassy for 15 outstanding female students from across the country in collaboration with Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn Initiative.
Koh Kong, Cambodia
I co-taught English to rural youth, grades 7-12 for 20 hours a week in a public high school. As part of my work, I shared best teaching practices, co-designed and delivered lessons, and implemented classroom management techniques. Outside of the classroom, I worked together with a community counterpart and fellow volunteer to design, plan, and facilitate a diverse range of activities. We started art and photography clubs, which showed work at a country-wide art festival. Additionally, we created a leadership club for 20 exemplary high school students. After being trained in leadership, needs assessment, community mapping and planning these students then attended provincial workshops, planned and executed by myself and other volunteers, and led individual sessions to 40-50 participants. To be most effective in my work, I integrated into the local community by living with a host family, speaking Khmer, and discussing community needs with local stakeholders.

I processed, tracked, and managed over 100 applicants’ admissions documents as well as personally interviewed at least 50 applicants, made final acceptance decisions for each and determined financial aid packages. At the same time, I was responsible for the finical management of the office from overseeing the office supply budget to depositing tuition checks and meeting with our consultant accounting firm.

For three semesters, I was a lifeline, coach, disciplinarian, and friend for American university students studying abroad in Beijing. I facilitated cross-cultural training to prepare students for life in China and spearhead several events for student engagement to help foster a positive community atmosphere including language exchange programs between foreign and Chinese students, movie nights, and holiday parties. Along with my fellow advisors, I served as the emergency contact for over 60 students each semester.
