Cultural advisory services on the implementation of Te Mana o te Wai and the integration of matāuranga into stormwater management sytems and plans

Ngā Kaihautū is a statutory (legally mandated) group appointed by the EPA Board. Members provide a broad overview of Māori interests and perspectives, rather than representing their individual iwi.Ngā Kaihautū has held an important role in the Environmental Protection Authority since its creation over a decade ago.The Environmental Protection Authority Act 2011 required that a Māori Advisory Committee be established to advise the EPA on policy, process, and decisions of the EPA under an environmental Act. It specified that the advice and assistance must be given from the Māori perspective.This relationship has always enabled Māori perspectives to form a key part of EPA considerations and decision making.

Te Puna (the Māori Advisory Group) was established under the Taumata Arowai–the Water Services Regulator Act 2020 and was appointed by the Acting Minister of Local Government on 20 May 2021. Te Puna is chaired by Tipa Mahuta. Te Poari o Taumata Arowai (the Board) is responsible for the governance of Taumata Arowai and Te Puna is integral to the success of that governance. The Memorandum of Understanding sets out their expectations and intentions to work as partners.

Ngāi Tahu appointment to Remediation working group to facilitate co-design of a work plan for Smelter site during operation and closure scenarios.

The Ngāi Tahu HSNO Kōmiti is responsible for monitoring EPA applications to introduce new hazardous substances or organisms into Te Wai Pounamu. The kōmiti provides guidance to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu on such applications and represents the concerns and values of Ngāi Tahu on such applications to the EPA. The Kōmiti also provides technical assistance to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu when required. I have written multiple submissions on HSNO applications, incorporating matauranga maori and assessing each application through a Te Ao Maori lens. I am also a part of the EPA's Te Herenga network, participated in multiple reassessment and EPA review processes and submitted on the HSNO amendment bill on behalf of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.

As an extension of my internship I was offered a Casual position with Tokona te Takata (iwi capability) to work towards implementation of online enrolment processes for their programms, and streamline existing processes.

As part of the PACE295 paper at University of Canterbury, I worked at the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu office completing a 75-hour internship.My placement was with Tokana te Takata (iwi capability) and consisted of a feasibility study and implementation plan for the development of online enrolment processes for their programes.

Advocating for mana whenua outcomes in stormwater management and the implementation of the Mahaanui Iwi Management plan. Conducting cultural monitoring on Christchurch urban streams utilising traditional methodologies and matauranga maori. Providing technical advice in the implementation of the Christchurch City Council's Comprehensive Stormwater Network Discharge Consent. Inputting into the design of stormwater treatment facilities to ensure cultural values are upheld and matauranga is incorporated into stormwater management
