Camp Greylock is a traditional day camp serving underprivileged youth in Vermont. As the director, I was responsible for managing a staff of 20, developing curriculum, coordinating state funds, and providing children and their families with an enriching outdoor experience in the context of the YMCA core values.

As director of the YMCA’s after school program, I was able to implement the character values of the YMCA in a manner contingent with the needs of students and families. The aim of my after school program is to provide students with more than just a place to go after school ends by developing a community-minded program focused on supplemental education and service-learning.

Although Physical Education is a large part of the curriculum at Malletts Bay School, the administration asked me to supplement it with various recreational games and activities during the childrens’ free periods. While being responsible for their safety, I would also create a learning environment focused on teamwork and edu-cation through play.

The A.C.E. Program is an enrichment program that focuses on supplemental curriculum for school-age students during the before and after school hours. As the director of this program, I was responsible for organizing and implementing educational and enriching activities for approximately 60 elementary students as well as managing a staff of 6.

During this particular summer, I kept my teaching skills honed by instructing children ages 5-15 at the community beach. Along with teaching kids how to swim, I supervised a lifeguard staff of 5 and was responsible for the maintenance of the beach and park area.

I started this group as a support structure for the numerous students in the school that were adopted by Willis-ton families. Because I myself am adopted, I understand the various emotions adolescents encounter while trying to find their identity, and strove to become their emotional ally in what can sometimes be a difficult journey.

Tasks include facilitating assigned literature discussions and organizing lesson plans based on the pre-determined Framework of Vermont Standards. I was also responsible for instructing a small group of special education students (those with Individualized Education Plans or 504 forms) with various learning disabilities. With these specific students, I focused on rudimentary vocabulary, spelling, and basic word study.

In my role as a Program Director, my responsibilities were two-fold. I was primarily responsible for organizing and leading an extracurricular subject-based program consisting of a group of 7 students. Because the students also lived together, my secondary responsibility was to lead these individuals in an academic as well as a personal setting.

During my time at the University of Vermont, I lived in a residence hall known as the Living/Learning center. Each summer, the University selects 6 students to represent this particular dorm during summer orientation. Tasks include tours, campus orientation, and Q&A presentations.
