Sometimes that tiny little rabbit hole you thought you'd go down actually ends up being a few petabytes deep.In the midst of doing more typical video game QA responsibilities like limit testing and bug finding, I stumbled into this big data rabbit hole and was amazed to see all the chaos of a massively multiplayer online game—attacks, gear, crafting and gathering—condensed into millions of rows of neatly-lined-up game data.To me, this was a treasure trove. The prospect of being able to play Sherlock Holmes with this vast game telemetry was motivation enough to learn, practice, and become proficient with the query languages, statistics concepts, and analytic methods necessary to turn those millions of rows back into something meaningful to various audiences. Analyzing this data and modeling it to tell a story about a player’s experience—whether it be a happy one where they get a great piece of gear, a frustrating one where they encounter a bug, or a fun one where they go questing with friends—has ignited in me a passion for data analytics I was surprised to find. I have a penchant for pattern-finding and a drive to do deep dives. In my current position, I am proud to be the person all people come to for answers. I am stubbornly self-sufficient and practiced at Googling my way to solutions or researching anything I don’t know but I'm also well-suited to playing a support class within a team and will always admit mistakes.Every skill I have learned in my pursuit of becoming a fully-fledged data guru—SQL, Python, Tableau, Elastic—has felt like an upgraded spell I’m eagerly seeking in preparation for a final boss encounter that has yet to come.If you have a quest for me that’ll give me another tool or you'd like to party up for that encounter—whatever it may be—please connect with me.
