As a Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Victim Advocate, I responded to crisis calls on the hotline. I provided support to survivors of sexual assault, from the beginning with responding to the hospital, through the trials and sentencing of perpetrators. I assisted survivors of domestic violence with safety planning and filing for Protection From Abuse (PFA) orders. In this role I also provided education to the community agencies including students at Emporia State University, local law enforcement, and judicial system. This position also allowed me the opportunity to speak with and provide information about domestic violence to those arrested for domestic violence prior to their sentencing in local city court. I also had the opportunity to serve and support children exposed to domestic violence. An opportunity presented itself to participate in the pilot project calls OARS (Orientation, Assessment Referrals, and Safety). This project was a collaboration between SOS, Inc, and the Department for Children and Families. In the role as OARS advocate I partnered with the Department for Children and Families with identifying and educating victims of domestic violence who entered the DCF system. A significant part of this role was also educating staff at the Department of Children and Families in domestic violence indicators and understanding of victims.
