Vice President Of Software Development And Architecture
Sr. Director Product
Sr. Director Product Architecture And Devops
Leading a technology transformation to a cloud native architecture. We are transforming all aspects of our product offering from infrastructure and software to processes and operations.
Director Software Architecture
In 2016 I moved from an individual contributor role to a leadership role that more accurately reflected by daily activities. I am responsible for the software architecture and devops teams within Prysm. We support several development teams spread across the US, India, and Ukraine. My team and I are responsible for:• Decomposition and re-implementation of our monolithic cloud offering.• Increasing our cloud footprint and scaling to multiple regions to provide the least latent experience for our globally distributed customer base• Providing open APIs for third party extensions• Addressing the data sovereignty needs of a global community• Supporting an ever-growing list of active feature enhancements• Developer tooling and process improvements• Operations of our public multi-tenant cloud• Software build, deployments and maintenance of our cloud infrastructure through an infrastructure as code process.
Principal Architect
I joined Prysm as a principal architect to lead the transformation of their Synthesis product offering from a monolithic web application to a loosely coupled microservices platform. Synthesis is a multi-user collaboration platform with near real-time multi-site performance. During this period, I designed, and led the implementation of Live Source Streaming. Live Source Streaming is a method to share content from a local source amongst a geographically dispersed set of participants in near real time. Building upon the Live Source Streaming feature I designed and led the implementation of a novel approach to enable a shared web browsing experience that facilitates group participation and collaboration.
Sr. Director, Enterprise And Cloud Architecture
Late in 2014 we began experimenting with the ‘cloud’, primarily the AWS cloud, and as a result a new strategic role was created within our organization. Throughout 2015 I lead the design, development and delivery of a customer driven cloud platform based on Java, AngularJS, and RESTful Web Services. This platform was initially targeted at a very small subset of users within a large philanthropic organization focused on improving global health. Due to the success of this initiative the user community has grown 4 times larger than the original target user community, and is now being leveraged across many different disciplines within the customer organization. This platform is expected to grow and become the data science platform used in all research activities of this organization. As we progress into 2016 and beyond we will be focusing on several strategic initiatives and broadening our use of the cloud across the entire organization. In this role I am responsible for providing architectural guidance, consistency and oversight across the organization.
Sr. Director Product Development
I ran the Discovery Desktop Business Unit and provided architectural oversight, implementation expertise, and dev-ops best practices for both on shore and offshore development teams. Working closely with Product Management, Application Scientist, Marketing, Business Development and operations to ensure open lines of communication and provide transparency into the ongoing development activities and operational performance of the business unit. Some key accomplishments were:• Introduced agile methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban to my business unit and led the organizational rollout of these methodologies across Certara as a result overall communication, quality and on-time delivery improved.• Streamlined and standardized dev-ops processes mentoring and coaching other business units within Certara on best practices and implementation resulting in more consistent and reproducible outputs from the development teams.• Introduced a global source strategy that resulted in a $1M annual savings. • Led the design, development and delivery of a new desktop product called Muse Invent. In 2015 we were nominated and received R&D Magazines top 100 Most Innovative Product award.Due to the overall improvements seen within the Discovery Desktop Business Unit and a long history of building high performing teams I was often called on to mentor and ‘rescue’ teams outside of my business unit.
Director, Platform Technologies
Led the engineering activities focused primarily on blue sky research for moving a suite of legacy products to a Service Oriented Architecture. I worked closely with Product Management, Marketing, and the heads other departments within the development organization to understand their needs and the needs of the user community so that a general purpose platform could be created that would allow us to re-architect our legacy product offerings into a more modern and relevant technology stack. Some key accomplishments during this period were:• The development of a novel ‘learning index’ for our Oracle Data Cartridge offering• The development of a technology stack that was used in several new product offerings that took a monolithic technology stack and decoupled it allowing for re-use and re-purposing of established and well validated technology outside of its traditional packaging.• The development of a shared, extensible data repository that facilitated open communication and transparency allowing customers to leverage data to make more informed decisions.
Development Manager
In collaboration with a large multi-national pharmaceutical company a piece of software called SARNavigator was developed. This was initially a research project that was looking at novel approaches to data analysis using chemo-informatics tools. The original research project quickly became a critical component of their research activities which prompted us to commercialize it. In order to commercialize this software, it needed to have more formalized development processes and rigor applied to it. I led these efforts and successfully took a very unstructured research code base and hardened it for commercial use.
Product Developer Ii
Part of the research team focused on experimenting and researching new data analysis techniques for chemical data by developing chemo-informatics tools.
Sr. Architect
Provided leadership and guidance on backend architecture for a Software as a Service application called ServeClick. Some key accomplishments while working on ServeClick were:• Designed and implemented one of the first XML-RPC methods.• Designed and implemented a clustering and failover mechanism for MySQL.Collaborated on the design and optimization of a resource optimization engine that focused on solutions for the Traveling Salesman Problem.
Senior Staff Engineer
I was a member of the senior technical staff at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas where I was responsible for the full Software Development Lifecycle of a system that enabled member banks to interface and manage their accounts online. Some of my key accomplishments were:• Designed and implemented a rule based auctioning system that was used to auction interest rates and funds online where each auction had a unique set of rules that governed it.• Created one of the first implementations of the W3C’s XSLT specification.Contributing member of the Apache Software Foundations JServ Servlet container which later became Jakarta and Tomcat.
Senior Consultant
While I was a ‘consultant’ at Norrell my focus was not on direct customer engagements but supporting our consultants in the field as the consultant’s consultant. While in this role I provided mentorship and guidance on emerging web technologies and defined best practices for use in customer engagements. While in this role I also served as a members of Borland’s Technical Advisory Board, and became a contributing member of the Apache Software Foundation as the principal author of the Element Construction Set. The Element Construction Set was one of the first Java projects to fall under the Java Apache project, and helped pave the way for what is now one of the largest sources of Open Source Java Code on the Internet. As a result of this contribution I became a member of one of the technical panels representing the Apache Software Foundation at JavaONE.
Software Technician
While at Motorola I served as a junior member of a software development team building manufacturing support tools. During this period I designed and built a tool for applying Statiscial Process Controls to the final manufacturing process, as well as collobrated on the design and implementation of an inventory management tool.
Group Leader
Provided direction and daily oversight of a staff of 16-23 production operators and technicians for the manufacturing floor. Collaborated with a cross functional team to improve throughput and reduce the number of operator errors in the final test manufacturing process.
