About Stephan Nagy

Over the course of my career I’ve had the opportunity to practice my craft in the manufacturing, finance, service, and most recently in the life sciences industries. This has allowed me to architect and implement solutions ranging from desktop applications to mission critical enterprise systems deployed both on premise and in the cloud, as well as to lead teams of all shapes and sizes. I introduced Agile methodologies into Tripos and lead the transition to Agile across Certara’s development organization. I am a seasoned professional with more than 20 years of experience designing, implementing and delivering software solutions through all stages of the software development lifecycle. I not only have a strong background in technology, but I am a proven leader with a strong business acumen.

  • Certara
Sr. Director, Enterprise And Cloud Architecture
    Certara Nov 2014 - Feb 2016
    Radnor, Pennsylvania, Us
Late in 2014 we began experimenting with the ‘cloud’, primarily the AWS cloud, and as a result a new strategic role was created within our organization. Throughout 2015 I lead the design, development and delivery of a customer driven cloud platform based on Java, AngularJS, and RESTful Web Services. This platform was initially targeted at a very small subset of users within a large philanthropic organization focused on improving global health. Due to the success of this initiative the user community has grown 4 times larger than the original target user community, and is now being leveraged across many different disciplines within the customer organization. This platform is expected to grow and become the data science platform used in all research activities of this organization. As we progress into 2016 and beyond we will be focusing on several strategic initiatives and broadening our use of the cloud across the entire organization. In this role I am responsible for providing architectural guidance, consistency and oversight across the organization.
  • Certara
    Sr. Director Product Development
    Certara 2007 - 2014
    Radnor, Pennsylvania, Us

Working closely with Product Management, Application Scientist, Marketing, Business Development and operations to ensure open lines of communication and provide transparency into the ongoing development activities and operational performance of the business unit. Some key accomplishments were:• Introduced agile methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban to my business unit and led the organizational rollout of these methodologies across Certara as a result overall communication, quality and on-time delivery improved.• Streamlined and standardized dev-ops processes mentoring and coaching other business units within Certara on best practices and implementation resulting in more consistent and reproducible outputs from the development teams.• Introduced a global source strategy that resulted in a $1M annual savings. • Led the design, development and delivery of a new desktop product called Muse Invent. In 2015 we were nominated and received R&D Magazines top 100 Most Innovative Product award.Due to the overall improvements seen within the Discovery Desktop Business Unit and a long history of building high performing teams I was often called on to mentor and ‘rescue’ teams outside of my business unit.
  • Tripos
    Director, Platform Technologies
    Tripos 2004 - Mar 2007
Led the engineering activities focused primarily on blue sky research for moving a suite of legacy products to a Service Oriented Architecture. I worked closely with Product Management, Marketing, and the heads other departments within the development organization to understand their needs and the needs of the user community so that a general purpose platform could be created that would allow us to re-architect our legacy product offerings into a more modern and relevant technology stack. Some key accomplishments during this period were:• The development of a novel ‘learning index’ for our Oracle Data Cartridge offering• The development of a technology stack that was used in several new product offerings that took a monolithic technology stack and decoupled it allowing for re-use and re-purposing of established and well validated technology outside of its traditional packaging.• The development of a shared, extensible data repository that facilitated open communication and transparency allowing customers to leverage data to make more informed decisions.
  • Tripos
    Development Manager
    Tripos Feb 2003 - Feb 2004
In collaboration with a large multi-national pharmaceutical company a piece of software called SARNavigator was developed. This was initially a research project that was looking at novel approaches to data analysis using chemo-informatics tools. The original research project quickly became a critical component of their research activities which prompted us to commercialize it. In order to commercialize this software, it needed to have more formalized development processes and rigor applied to it. I led these efforts and successfully took a very unstructured research code base and hardened it for commercial use.
