Stephen Alcorn is printmaker, illustrator, painter, graphic designer, musician and educator. His work represents a confluence of old and new world influences: Italianate folk-art and the religious Icon on the one hand, and Post-Cubist Modern Art and American Pop Culture on the other. As such his work is at once a celebration of pre-industrial technical traditions and modern-day formal and conceptual invention. In addition to being a versatile stylist, throughout his life Alcorn has remained an avid draftsman comitted to drawing directly from life on a daily basis. His “Daily Drawings” series of studies and the pedagogical approaches he has developed as an Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University/SOTA have been the subject of numerous feature articles both in Europe and the U.S. In the realm of printmaking, Stephen is recognized his employment and innovative development of the relief-block print, and more specifically, that of the reduction print.Alcorn has illustrated over 45 books for a variety of age groups, including "Odetta: The Queen of Folk," which won the 2010 Parents’ Choice Award; "Langston Hughes: An Illustrated Edition," which won the 1998 Carter G. Woodson Book Award; "I, Too Sing America: Three Centuries of African American Poetry," which was selected as a Best Book for Young Adults by the American Library Association, and "Let it Shine," a Coretta Scott King Honor Book. Major publishers throughout the world routinely employ his award-winning portraiture and illustration, and his work has been the subject of numerous feature magazine articles appearing in Print, Graphis, U&LC, Linea Grafica, Grafica & Disegno, Prometeo, and Abitare.
