Originally from Maryland, I received my Ph.D. from the College of Communication and Information at Florida State University in 2011 after writing a dissertation on sports memorabilia. My undergraduate career consisted of work in television, radio, and digital film production – with stints at WHFC-FM, WBAL-TV, and at ESPN covering the 2002 World Cup.My teaching and curriculum development expertise within the field of Communication as well as Communication and Sport has developed through nearly two-decades-long career in higher education - from community colleges to private universities and large public universities.Playing on the dynamic between popular culture and the rhetorical theories of place and memory, my research interests involve a wide array of topics dealing with sport, including the development of sports fan cultures, nostalgic influences of media sport, and the rhetoric of stadium narratives. I'm particularly interested in the mythologies of soccer and the creative activities of supporters throughout the United States and México.My published research articles appear in academic journals Communication and Sport, the International Journal of Sports Communication, and NINE: A Journal of Baseball and Culture. My work has also appeared in a number of edited anthologies, including "Perspectives on the U.S.-Mexico Soccer Rivalry" (2017), "Social Justice and the Modern Athlete" (2023), and "Football and Diaspora" (2024). As a result, my writing has been cited in outlets ranging from the Los Angeles Times to the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication and the Cultural Studies/Critical Methodologies journal. My speaking engagements include numerous conference presentations as well as guest lectures at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communication and the Department of Communication at the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes, Mexico.
