Rescue Coordinator
As a Rescue Coordinator at the Lower Churchill Project my responsibility is to provide emergency response for the Powerhouse and its surrounding structures, specializing in technical rescue. Other duties include coordinating emergency response actions in cooperation with the site fire, medical, and security teams as well as consultation with the Incident Command Center ion emergency response initiatives. Qualifying that all emergency response equipment and required safety gear is in compliance with the appropriate codes and standards is a part of daily activities. Additional duties include ensuring atmospheric and noise levels are in compliance with OHS standards. Representing the site operation authority, it is important to work with each contractor on site to ensure their rescue plans and emergency procedures are up to date and are practical.
Rescue Advisor
As a Rescue Advisor for Astaldi Canada at the Lower Churchill Project, I am responsible for ensuring all rescue plans are adopted by the Client and are being followed and understood by workers at the site. Opening confined space permits as well as performing atmospheric gas testing on site were daily duties. Monthly fire extinguisher, first aid, eye wash, & AED inspections would also be associated with this role. Executing a safe rescue when a situation arises would be under the direction of the Rescue Advisor. As this job is within the site Safety Department, I would also ensure workers are abiding by OHS Regulations in which the Governing Body enforces as well as conducting post incident interviews and being involved with investigations.
Emergency Response
As a member of the Emergency Response Team for the Hebron Project, my main duties included daily atmospheric gas testings for confined space entry, fire suppression, high angle rescue, and assisting with medical situations. During the time where I was not actively engaged in fighting a hazardous site, I was responsible for confirming that all fire, medical, & rescue equipment were in the ready state at all times. Other common duties included monthly inspections of fire protection systems such as alarm panels, hose cabinets, and fire extinguishers along with first aid, eye wash, & AED stations to certify all equipment was operable. Furthermore, meeting with tradespeople to go over upcoming work scopes to provide rescue plans and hazard identification for the task was another responsibility of the team.
Fire Dispatcher
The primary responsibility of a dispatcher is to receive emergency calls and to dispatch the proper agency for the situation (i.e. Fire, Medical, Police, Haz-Mat, public works department) through computer-aided dispatch and radio communication systems. With the implementation of the province wide 911 system, I would also receive and dispatch calls from outside the jurisdiction. Database records for emergency calls (GFWFD, BFFD, and Fire and Emergency Services NL) were then completed to provide accountability for the call. Daily fire apparatus inventory checks as well as station maintenance was also a part of a dispatchers responsibilities while awaiting emergency calls.
Electrician
As an apprentice electrician with NL Housing my main duty was to help troubleshoot electrical problems in residential housing units in the area. Minor problems were primarily solved over the phone with tenants, others required a response for repair. Many properties needed to be fully rewired which were due for electrical upgrading in which permits needed to be drawn through Service NL and also arranging disconnect/reconnect with the utility suppliers. Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) systems were installed in units as well in which advanced training needed to be obtained. Stocking the company vehicle with needed materials for the jobs, as well as a regular stock which was audited regularly was also my responsibility.
