Fundamentally, we must change our trajectory, and we can do so in a way that creates real and lasting value.As one of the earliest members of the US Green Building Council, I have become a student of market transformation and have used the cleaning industry as my "living laboratory." I have had the privilege of consulting for leading manufacturers, building owners, governments, labor unions, and environmental and activist groups. Today, I am regarded as the "Father of Green Cleaning", but the lessons learned apply to all segments. I have developed a robust toolbox to help organizations change. I firmly believe that the issues/problems that confront our children and society are real -- and good intentions alone are not good enough.One of my newer ventures that has proven quite successful is as founder of Sustainability Dashboard Tools. We have developed a web-based solution to help building owners reduce their consumption of energy, water, purchased materials, transportation, and more, ultimately lowering operating expenses and environmental impacts. Our goal is to "create a culture of sustainability" through the 3E's (engagement, education, and empowerment), and as Benjamin Franklin once suggested, "we can do well by doing good."One of my primary objectives now is to promote sustainability in the professional cleaning industry. I am a member of the ISSA Sustainability Committee, and we work to educate industry members on how to adopt sustainable business practices. We also assist them in preparing sustainability reports for their clients and help them implement business practices that benefit the environment, society, and their businesses' profitability. It is essential to remember that sustainability can help businesses cut costs, improve efficiency, reduce waste, and save energy, water, and fuel.
