When people ask what I do my most common reply is "I work at the water plant." This phrase gets a lot of replies, mostly jokes about not doing anything. Simply telling someone I work at the water plant brings up plenty of images, mostly that of a sweet government job you're lucky to have.I am lucky to work in water treatment industry, but definitely not because it is easy. Instead of simply replying "I work at the water plant," what I should be saying is "Everyday of the year I'm responsible for the health and safety of the drinking water for everyone in my community." That does a better job of saying what we do in our industry. I oversee 1,000+ tests a month on your water supply so you and your families can enjoy safe, potable water. As Americans we take this simple, amazing blessing for granted. Accessibility to water, or lack thereof, holds back billions of people from being able to prosper. My job, 365 days a year, is to make sure we don't lose that blessing. I'm here so you can confidently cook your meals, bathe your kids and drink your water without worrying about water born illnesses that effect more than 780 million people in developing countries around the world.To answer that first question, I work at the water plant.
