Characterisation And AnalyticsSeagate Technology Jan 2021 - Jan 2024Londonderry, Northern Ireland, United KingdomCharacterisation and analytics group at Seagate responsible for characterisation of HAMR writer performance and analysis of life testing trends. Design of Life testing analysis to identify failure modes in accelerated life testing and subsequent failure analysis to link fail mode to behaviour observed to identify areas requiring reliability improvements. Coding of JMP and python scripts to enable automated analysis of big data sets with millions of rows of data.Life testing of HAMR hard drives which involves analysing data on hard drives that use heat assisted Magnetic writing to try and meet customer reliability requirements. This involves testing the drives at high temperatures and workloads for >200 hours to overstress the heads then use this data to project fail rates over 3-5 years. This requires monitoring data collected continuously over many days and writing scripts to analyse it to determine what component has failed and then using Weibull fitting to determine fail rates for components. I am also responsible forproviding guidance on and organising the failing heads to be sent for failure analysis to try and provide feedback on failure mechanisms so designs can be improved. I regularly provide training and mentorship for new hires on topics of data pulling and analysis methods. I have experience working with a global team across multiple time zones, developing strong working relationships with our teams in Thailand, Singapore and the United States. I have completed 2 short term assignments with the test development team in the United States, lasting 6 and 9 months. -

Research And Development ScientistSeagate Technology Jan 2012 - Jan 2024Londonderry, Northern Ireland, United KingdomWorking as test engineer/analyst in research and development for new hard drive writer and reader designs. Primary responsibilities are analysis of data from new designs and new test development. Fluent in SQL, JMP data analysis and scripting and in depth knowledge of hard drive testing methodologies. As a test engineer in the product development team, I have been involved in delivery of six different hard drive products to market of capacities ranging from 250Gb -->4TB. My role primarily involved analysing performance data from new hard drive reader and writer designs. This involved keeping up to date with the latest head, media and mechanical design details and expectations and providing performance feedback to designand process teams and condensing large volumes of data into short concise summaries. When expectations are not met I would dig deeper into data to try and explain offsets. I was responsible for testing setup and ensuring appropriate test settings and best practiseswere being implemented and debugging any issues that arose during testing. This required regular data pulling from multiple tables from the Seagate database and use of SQL queries and other tools to retrieve appropriate data from dozens of different tables aswell as FTP sites and SEM images stored on websites. Datasets being looked at would normally contain tens of thousands to millions of data points for each design and hundreds of different metrics. For data analysis SAS JMP software was the main tool I have used as it is capable and easy to use software for working with big datasets. I self-taught myself JMP scripting language and am fluent in writing scripts that can pull and manipulate data, images and text and plot dozens of graphs with a small number of clicks that are regularly used by others in the department.
