About Stephen Benchluch

I am a firm believer in the development of renewable energy and the need for data-driven predictive analytics to manage the grid operation under large percentages of renewables. As a strategist, planner and developer of power generation portfolios and transmission systems with enormous market and technical insight gained through experience with some of the most important companies in the world domestically and internationally, I enjoy delivering value to organizations. My work includes the assessment of the latest technologies such as renewable generation, energy storage and others and transmission planning. In this capacity, I am known for my meticulous planning, outstanding results, and passion for the industry. It’s my keen interest in assessing the potential risks in projects that emerge during its development that has always enabled greater results that surpass the requirement in the original scope of the project, and have produced very large savings:★ More than 100 million USD savings per year in major projects in my most recent role as Senior Advisory Consultant, in the Power System Planning Department of SA. During my time with Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia’s power and water sectors were moving through a process of major reform and the Kingdom underwent significant transition to low-carbon energy generation. ★ Managing a long-term Water and Power Project, my simulation models were utilized by the rest of the department for planning purposes and my results provided the best up to date portfolio of future generation assets in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This project was recognized for producing large savings with respect to previous portfolios developed at the company.Businesses need to be constantly reinventing and adapting to the new technological environment, where there are more options for the customer to choose from. Aside from the many environmental benefits, renewable energy is accessible to all, its supply is secure, its continuous technological improvements deliver growing efficiency and reduced costs, and it is less affected by geopolitical crises, price spikes and disruptions in the supply chain.I consistently put in the time honing my edge and updating my knowledge. Thorough attention to detail allows me to identify key areas of focus on projects while implementing new processes for documentation, automation, and benchmarking. My interpersonal acumen fosters a communication culture, unlocking many channels of transparent mutual understanding through project meetings, group discussions and open access to information.

Saudi Aramco is the world's largest integrated oil and gas company. Over my years as a consultant, advising on the evolution toward power systems of the future, I have leveraged my experience with some of the most recognizable companies in the world to provide considerable savings for Saudi Aramco. I generated State of Utility Sector reports to provide decision-makers and planners with future-facing insight on utility expansion and transformation. Recently, there has been significant transition to low-carbon energy generation, and I have been on the forefront of examining the potential of integrating wind and solar energy (35 GW) into the transmission grid of Saudi Arabia by performing load flow and dynamic stability analysesThe large-scale, high-value power and gas projects that I conceived, executed and managed have resulted in value creation (typically over 1 Billion USD over a 15 to 20-year period for each project) for the company and for multiple stakeholders in the KSA. Some of these include:► Analysis of future thermal, renewable, and water energy production requirements in KSA: Led a cross-functional team and built a portfolio of optimal generation assets for 2017-2040, and delivered plan to minimize electricity costs and optimize reliability.► Managed the first “unconventional” gas to power project in KSA in order to optimize the Kingdom’s fuel mix ► Developed a comprehensive co-simulation platform for power & gas in Plexos to analyze savings opportunities in the operation and long-term planning of the power system and its interdependence with the gas system. This platform was applied to ongoing studies, including gas forecasting, gas production optimization, and gas storage studies.
