Aspire Zone, Qatar

As Director of Venues and Events, I led a transformative journey that turned Aspire Zone from a facility project office into one of the world’s premier venue management organizations. Guiding a team of 120 professionals, we managed the sport city's state-of-the-art facilities, including a 60,000-seat stadium, large indoor arena, sports clubs, aquatic centers and extensive parklands.I oversaw successful delivery of some of the largest sporting events in the Middle East at that time. For example, we hosted the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2010, the Asian Football Championships in 2010, and the Arab Games in 2011. We also brought high-profile football matches to Qatar, such as Brazil vs. England in 2010 and Brazil vs. Argentina in 2011. These events significantly raised the profile of Aspire Zone on the global stage.Under my leadership, our calendar grew to exceed 1,000 events annually, attracting 1.5 million visitors annually and achieving ambitious RoI targets. Additionally, the launch of new sports and leisure facilities under my direction led to a 50% increase in facility utilization and revenue.As Chief Strategy Officer, I took on the challenge of leading the development of Aspire Zone Foundation’s first comprehensive corporate strategy plan and integrated operating model. This ambitious project unified member organizations, which spanned sports venues and events, youth academy and sports medicine hospital.I negotiated and secured high-value agreements with the Ministry of Sport, Olympic Committee, National Federations, and event rights holders. These agreements not only detailed Aspire Zone’s diverse service portfolio, but also quantified the precincts contribution the sports sector economy.In both roles, my strategic leadership, commitment to operational excellence and stakeholder management played pivotal roles in driving Aspire Zone’s growth and success, firmly establishing it as a global leader in sports business.

As an Advisory Board Member, the role encompasses a broad range of strategic and advisory responsibilities aimed at enhancing the conference's impact and value to industry professionals globally. This included providing guidance on the overall strategic direction of the SEAT Conference, ensuring it addresses current and emerging trends in sports and entertainment technology I collaborated with other board members to develop a compelling and relevant conference agenda that includes keynote presentations, panel discussions, and workshops. I also leveraged industry expertise to provide insights on the latest technological advancements and innovations in the sports and entertainment sectors, helping shape the conference content.Board Member responsibilities also extended to facilitating connections between industry leaders, technology providers, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration and partnerships. This includes identifying potential sponsors and partners that align with the conference’s goals. As well as acting as an ambassador for the SEAT Conference, I also provided ongoing advice and support to the conference organizers on various aspects, including event logistics, marketing strategies, and attendee engagement.

As Course Director, I developed and delivered the "Managing Digital Transformation in Sport" program, an innovative online course designed to equip sports business professionals with the skills and knowledge to navigate the digital revolution within the sports industry.I crafted a comprehensive curriculum that addressed the key challenges and opportunities presented by digital transformation, focusing on areas such as strategic planning, digital marketing, fan engagement, data analytics, and technology integration. The program attracted a diverse cohort of sports business professionals from Europe, the UK, the USA, and Latin America, representing major sports leagues and teams globally.Leveraging my extensive network of industry professionals, I curated a high-calibre guest speaking panel, featuring thought leaders and experts who provided valuable insights and real-world perspectives. This enriched the learning experience and ensured that participants gained practical, actionable knowledge.The course was delivered in partnership with the Sports Business Institute, and its success was reflected in the positive feedback from participants and the tangible impact on their professional development and organizational performance. My role as Course Director involved not only curriculum development and delivery but also continuous engagement with participants, facilitating discussions, and providing mentorship to help them apply their learning effectively.This role demonstrated my commitment to advancing the field of sports business education and my ability to lead and deliver impactful educational programs that drive innovation and excellence in the industry.

As Sports Manager, I was entrusted management of the city's sports and recreation programs, a responsibility that encompassed the strategy and operations of numerous venues, events and programs. My tenure was marked by significant achievements in stakeholder engagement, facility master planning, and successful funding acquisitions.I developed long-term strategic plans that provided a roadmap for future development and ensured the sustainable growth of sports programs and facilities.To master planning facility developments, I led stakeholder engagement processes with community members, sports organizations and government agencies. I developed detailed business cases, including needs assessments, feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses. I successfully authored numerous funding proposals to state and federal government agencies, resulting in significant financial support for sports infrastructure projects. I oversaw the daily operations of various sports facilities, ensuring they were maintained to the highest standards and were accessible and safe for all users, managing capital improvement projects that enhanced the functionality and appeal of sports venues. This included upgrades to playing surfaces, installation of lighting systems, and expansion of spectator amenities.I managed a diverse portfolio of sports and recreation programs, ensuring they met the needs of the community and aligned with the council’s strategic goals.
