Completed a Doctorate in Natural Language Processing with National University Galway. The aim of my thesis was to identifying prevalent information about a user. Social media forums such as Twitter and Boards.ie have been explored, but particular emphasis has been placed on Reddit. While it is relatively new as an area of study, there are many facets to it that make it ideal for any ML researcher. In addition to being easily accessible, there are subreddits that are devoted to specialised topics, user pages which keep a log of all of a user’s activity and a voting system that can be used to rank the importance of comments made there. The inter-connectedness of users can be mapped by examining the threads they subscribe to. My hypothesis is that people within a subculture often use similar nomenclature which can be modelled and used to detect new unseen content of interest. I have a master in Software Engineering and Design. I achieved a 1.1 from my thesis titled 'The Application of Reinforcement Learning to Robotics'. It involved applying Reinforcement Algorithms to the goal of trying to teach a robot to play connect four. The Robot was not given any specifics of the game other than the rules and from this it learned to 'play' the game. NXT mindstorms were used to embody the robot and it autonomously carried out its own intended moves. The project included taking input from a webcam and processing the image. The board state is extracted and sent to a database of the agents previously seen states. The optimum move in these states has been valued by the experiences of the agent attained through bootstrapping. A reinforcement learning algorithm was employed to determine value. The select state was then returned to the robot, which physically executed the move. The robot then waits for the user to make a move. In addition to my masters I have a Higher Diploma in Software Engineering and Design. The Hdip was a comprehensive course that gave us a robust understanding of programming. Through learning C, Java, MySQL and Visual Basic we learned the principles of programming and developed an understanding that facilitates an easy absorption of other computer languages. My undergraduate degree is in Social Political Science and English. To obtain I spent a year living in Sweden Uppsala which is the center for Peace and Conflict studies. While there I had the opportunity to hear some very inspiring lectures from guest lecturers that would have had first hand experience in dealing with some of the more troubled areas and was a inspirational time.
