About Stephen Browne

I began my career in London with The Economist Intelligence Unit, joining the United Nations in 1976 where I spent the next 33 years with assignments in Thailand, Somalia, Ukraine, Rwanda, USA and Switzerland. From 1992-6 I was the UN representative in Ukraine, and from 1998-9 I was the UN resident coordinator and humanitarian coordinator in post-war Rwanda. From 1999-2004 I was assigned to New York where, among other responsibilities, I was Director for Poverty Eradication and Social Development in the UN Development Programme, helping to initiate the process of monitoring the Millennium Development Goals.From 2006-9, I was Deputy Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, Geneva, with responsibility for policy and programmes. In 2010, I founded the Future UN Development System (FUNDS) Project, of which I was co-director with Professor Tom Weiss of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, New York.Career responsibilities:Current- Adjunct professor, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies- Board member, Advisory Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) - Founder and co-Director, Future UN Development System (FUNDS) Project- Senior Fellow, Ralph Bunche Institute for International StudiesPrevious- Deputy Executive Director, International Trade Centre (UN/WTO), Geneva- UN resident coordinator in Rwanda and Ukraine- Director, Poverty and Social Policy, UNDP- Chair, UN system poverty working group- Director, ICT for Development, UNDP- Director, Asian regional programmes, UNDP Publications: 812 books on aid and development; 100 book chapters, blogs and articles on various development topics.   • Initiated with the Government the (multi-donor) Poverty Alleviation Strategy.
