So, how does a bookstore manager become an accountant?To start off, find a place you love. My wife had just graduated college and we had moved near Charlottesville, VA. While we were getting settled, I decided to get a part-time position at Barnes & Noble as I began the grand job search. The job search ended before it really began. Within a few weeks, the part-time job became a full-time promotion to head cashier. Personally, I think it was at least in part due to my legendary inability to operate any known cookware Peter Principling me out of the Café! Just a few weeks after that, I was offered a department manager position, which began my work in management, a fifteen-year odyssey that led me to four stores in three different cities, finally ending up as a store manager. B&N became my work-home and the staff there my other family. Along the way, I found a new home in Hardy, VA, a new baseball team (Go Nats!), and most importantly, two kids that I adore.As time went on, my interests and priorities shifted. Leadership is a big part of my life, developing team members, setting timelines and budgets, and having critical conversations are all still important to me, yet I found myself more and more fascinated by the inner workings of the business, the financial side of the equation. I've always prided myself on my intellectual curiosity and decision-making and realized that perhaps I might be better suited in accounting.So I ended my career at B&N and started working on a new calling by enrolling at Liberty University, just down the road from my house. In January of 2022, I earned my Master's degree in Accounting, graduating with a 3.9 GPA and being accepted into the Delta Mu Delta Honor Society. Now, I'm looking for a place to call my new work-home as I transition into the role of an accountant and getting ready to take the next big step, my CPA!
