I've spent my career in construction. What was a summer job working as a carpenters Apprentice evolved into a career. I had planned on following my father as a commercial pilot, but due to a hearing loss I could not pass my physical. I left school to decide on what I would do instead, I haven't made an entry in my log book since 1967.I discovered I really enjoyed building and took great pleasure in the end product. My family did not really approve and felt it was a hard road for me to take as I had always taken college prep classes and had enrolled in a commercial aviation course in College.My Uncle retired early and I was working out of the union hall, listening to the older carpenters complain about the trade and burning then selves out, I was torn about continuing in the trade. As luck would have it I fell into a position with Growth Co. They were a clothing retail company specializing in Levi Strauss products and had a chain of stores called You and You Levis. I was mentored into a Project Managers position as the Senior PM was retiring. I traveled the east coast managing negotiations with mall Companies , Architects to build our stores. When I started in 1974 we had 67 stores when I left to move to CO we had a 178 stores which were sold to the Gap.I went to work in Boulder for Hancock and Johnston. Larry Hancock asked why if I had been a PM was I working as a carpenter, I explained I liked working out doors and hated the office. He said I should be a Superintendent, which appealed to me, but I had no experience in site work or infrastructure. He arraigned for me to take evening classes at a CSU extension in Loveland as long as I maintained a B average. My first job as a Superintendent was the Bank of Boulder Office Building, that was in 1979 and I've worked as a Superintendent ever since and truly love it. I take pride in putting a team spirit together.. It's a wonderful feeling when a job comes together and the Owner is pleased with the product. The Best
