About Stephen C. Van Hedger

I am currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Huron University College at Western University. My research focuses on fundamental questions in the domain of learning and memory on the one hand, and in the domain of pattern understanding on the other. The way in which I integrate these two areas of research is through the study of perceptual expertise – specifically, how it develops and is how it is maintained. In order to gain traction on the question of how one becomes an expert in a given domain, much of my research has focused on music and speech as model systems, in part because there is such experiential variability in these domains. The articles I have published in this area have touched on the following research questions:1. Through what cognitive and neural mechanisms do we recognize and understand patterns in our environments?2. How do we balance stability and flexibility in learning new perceptual representations?3. How do environmental and cognitive factors shape the learning and maintenance of auditory skills?4. What do we implicitly learn from our auditory environments, and does this kind of learning relate to explicit skill acquisition?

    London, Canada Area
As a BrainsCAN Postdoctoral Fellow, I worked with Ingrid Johnsrude and Laura Batterink at the Brain and Mind Institute (Western University). I led projects on how context and prior experiences shapes the learning and memory of auditory sequences, such as speech and music.
  • The University Of Chicago
    Postdoctoral Scholar
The University Of Chicago Sep 2015 - Jun 2018
    Chicago, Il
From 2015 to 2018 I was a Postdoctoral Scholar, working jointly with Marc Berman and Howard Nusbaum in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago. In this capacity, I expanded my research questions to assess how particular interventions (e.g., interactions with nature) improved cognitive processes, which has implications for the developmental trajectory of expertise.
  • University Of Chicago
    Ph.D. Student In Cognitive Psychology
University Of Chicago Sep 2010 - Aug 2015
    Chicago, Il
In my Ph.D. research, I designed both behavioral and neuroscientific experiments that examined how pitch is perceived and remembered across various populations (e.g., absolute pitch possessors, musical experts without absolute pitch, individuals with high/low auditory working memory capacities).I also taught eight undergraduate courses (three as the instructor of record). In 2014, I received the Starkey Duncan Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, which is a departmental award given to 1-2 graduate students each year based on evaluations from students. In 2015 I was awarded the John Dewey Prize Lectureship to teach an undergraduate course on music perception and cognition, called "The Musical Mind."
  • University Of Chicago
    Research Associate
University Of Chicago Jun 2009 - Sep 2010
    Chicago, Il
As a research associate, I worked jointly in the Psychology and Music Departments (with Drs. Berthold Hoeckner and Howard Nusbaum) in the designing and conducting of experiments on multimodal integration.Additionally, I helped several graduate students conceptualize and execute year-long experiments on multimedia perception as a part of a course co-taught by Drs. Berthold Hoeckner and Howard Nusbaum.
  • New York Philharmonic
    Metcalf Fellow
New York Philharmonic Jun 2008 - Sep 2008
I designed gallery exhibits for Avery Fisher Hall, as well as assisted in archiving the Leonard Bernstein score collection.
