I am a hacker. I am a software developer. I am a computer programmer. What do all of these descriptions mean? Not much. The reality is that I program - I solve problems and build cool things with computers by writing code in an assortment of programming languages. It's what I enjoy and it's what I'm good at.I am comfortable in PHP, C, & Java and I find myself tinkering from time to time in D, Python, and C++. Of course, all of this happens exclusively on Linux. At this point in my life and career, learning new languages and tech are as easy as learning to drive a new model of car - I just have to find where the turn signals and windshield wipers are. But not all tech is created equal and not all of it feels natural to each developer, so I do have my favorites and I can be opinionated about stuff that I don't like.So what is it that I like and why do I even do this in the first place? Mental challenges. That is what drives me. A constant stream of problems to solve and hurdles to overcome. Merge that with my passion for computers and here we are today.However, I am no one-trick pony. I started a quality assurance company where I worked with third-tier automotive manufacturers to keep their lines moving when quality issues were found. When that was no longer viable, I took a position as the first quality manager at a paper tray manufacturer. It was my responsibility to create the quality department from scratch: setting procedures, tolerances, and corrective actions. It was at that time that I decided my passion for programming was too much to remain a hobby and I transitioned into software development.Along the way, I've been fortunate to be exposed to many ancillary responsibilities. Some of these include public speaking at dealer events to explain new features of the company's wholesale buying site to non-technical tire dealers, liaise across multiple internal teams with every level of stakeholder from junior developers to C-suite executives and communicate with vendors and customers to build respectful relationships, and managing projects with no support personnel to managing departments of 2 to 20 people - from quality techs to account reps and web developers.While I am most definitely a software developer thru and thru, I prefer to operate as a Jack-of-all-Trades to keep things fresh and interesting. This is why, when I'm not nerding out at my computer, I am building or restoring sailboats, or heading off on some insane adventure.
