About Stephen Clarke

Serial Deep-Tech entrepreneur, in renewable energy and clean water, leading start-ups through IPOs and beyond. Founded the first modern era, Deep Tech Incubator/Accelerator to focus on renewable energy and water. Conceived, developed and executed multiple technology licenses, trade sales, company spin-offs and IPOs securing >>$200 million in early-stage co-financing. Active advocate for Energy Storage since the late 1990’s, and in 2014 helped shape and secure California’s AB 2514, the legislation which underpinned CA’s Energy Storage industry. Founded QuanVerge in 2018 to continue this journey. Started with 9 in gas-turbines at Rolls-Royce, in the UK, where he led the company’s Manufacturing Engineering activities. In 2017 Steve conceived, secured and lead AquaMetals partnership with JCI, the World's largest battery company and customer for recycled battery materials. This started the transformation of AquaMetals into a technology licensing business. In April 2018, after successfully transitioning AquaMetals into commercial operations, Steve left the company to form QuanVerge Inc.

    Steve co-founded Applied Intellectual Capital in London, UK and relocated it to the SF Bay Area in 1993.He established and built the company from a foundation of technical consulting, contract R&D and self-funded research. In 1999, he transitioned the company into one of the first Deep Tech, Accelerators, leveraging AIC's lab, engineering, prototyping and technical capabilities to develop and spin-off technologies and companies in water treatment, metals recovery, clean energy, energy storage. An important and common core of this included continuing the development and innovative uses of novel electrode and catalyst support materials including Ti4O7 and its derivatives.Over the next 16 years, AIC developed and successfully exited multiple technologies and spin-off companies, which included its own IPO. In 2014, Steve took on the management of one of its asset companies, AquaMetals, and lead it through to successful IPO before exiting in 2018.

    Steve was selected to join Rolls Royce's scholarship program directly from High School, through which he gained a B.Sc in Mechanical Engineering and an M.Sc/MBA in Engineering Enterprise Management. He spent most of following 9 years in the automation of manufacturing operations for advanced aircraft engines. This included pioneering work in robotics, laser guided vehicles, automated parts delivery, ERP and facilities simulation.By 1985 he was managing a staff of 30 Professional Engineers leading the automation of the Company's blade, disc and shaft manufacturing facilities. He also helped found and manage Rolls Royce's continuing education program which allowed existing manufacturing technical staff to achieve an MSc in Manufacturing Engineering.
