My permanent position is Professor at Cleveland State University, where I hold a joint appointment in the History and Philosophy/Comparative Religion Departments. My specialty is the history and religion of the Islamic Middle East and North Africa (MENA region). My research focuses upon the use of religious imagery for political legitimization in the MENA during the early modern period (14th-18th centuries) . I spent two years conducting research in Morocco (with funding from Fulbright and Fulbright Hays fellowships, 1999-2001), another five months teaching in Morocco on a Fulbright Scholars fellowship in 2006, an academic year (2014-15) teaching at the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan, and am currently back in Jordan on another Fulbright Scholars fellowship. I have presented my research at a number of scholarly meetings, including the Middle East Studies Association and the World Congress of Middle East Studies. I have also conducted research in Spain on several occasions. Once a year, I host a map walk at Cleveland State on large maps of the Middle East and Islamic world, during which students can literally “walk through the Islamic world” to improve student knowledge of geography in the Mediterranean region, Africa and Asia. Among my other teaching techniques are my case study debates in which students represent the positions of different groups in debates drawn from Middle Eastern history. I also regularly teach a class on Interfaith relations between Muslims, Christians and Jews. In terms of interests, I'm passionate about Jesus Christ, my wonderful wife, daughters, and grandchildren, studying history, the Middle East, traveling, the Arabic language, NBA basketball.
