Stephen Crooms is a 2021-22 Warner Media Fellow with a passion for story structure and character-based thrillers. He was raised a biracial African-American in the Berkeley Hills by his white mother, which led to a struggle with racial identity and a great sense of existing outside the lines. As an adult, he became a high school teacher to many African-American students who felt the gangsta identity was the only way to be Black in America.All this led to a fascination with characters grappling with the boxes that society has placed them in. Stephen loves using Robert McKee’s story principles to create nuanced characters of all colors trying to break free from society’s limitations. His first script, The Lavender Scare, made him a finalist in the Imagine Impact Fellowship, and got him accepted into the Warner Media All Access Program in 2021.

Finally, I wrote, edited and published numerous articles for BPF's on-line magazine, Turning Wheel Media. The most exciting of these articles was my Buddhist review of The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander. -

TeacherBreakthrough Collaborative Jun 2005 - Aug 2006San Francisco Bay AreaI taught a six week course on World War II to under-privileged fifth and sixth graders in Summer 2005 and Summer 2006, creating the entire curriculum myself. I organized the course into one-week units, and wrote all of the reading materials and worksheets. I created lesson plans for each day, with stated goals and methods to achieve those goals. In the end, the kids and I both got a lot out of the experience.
