About Stephen Bender
I have three related areas of specialization:1. Topical specialization in housing and urban issues 2. Technical specialization in designing for modular construction and prefabrication. 3. Theoretical specialization in collaboration and innovation practices applied to complex design problems.I apply my areas of specialization as a Associate Instructional Professor in the School of Architecture’s NAAB accredited Master in Architectureprogram, Themed Environments Integration degree, and the Healthcare Design Integration certificate, where I teach in the design studio and research course sequences of the graduate curriculum. I coordinate curriculum for CityLab-Orlando faculty and work with faculty to develop new coursework and programs. My program developments center on integration curriculum, which is focused on transdisciplinary innovation through design research. These degree programs aim to create new knowledge that bridges disciplines to help solve wicked (open, complex, dynamic, networked) problems. This opens CityLab programs to students with diverse educational and career backgrounds, many not in architecture or design, to engage in collaborative active learning, and graduate to become design leaders. My teaching, research, and service spans the design and fabrication of buildings, policy, education, strategic planning, and community design. I have my dream job.https://dcp.ufl.edu/citylab/Themed Environments, https://dcp.ufl.edu/tei/Healthcare Design, https://dcp.ufl.edu/citylab/msas-health/

At UF’s Citylab- Orlando, I am responsible for teaching foundational and advanced architectural design, technical and theoretical support courses, and facilitate Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) seminars. Specifically, I teach graduate architecture with a focus on revitalizing neighborhoods through design. To be a successful program with an emphasis on urbanism, especially concerning Florida cities, Citylab must be connected to neighborhoods in the Orlando region through direct engagement with citizens and community organizations. In this context, my teaching and research spans the design of buildings, policy, education, and strategic planning and community design. My research and practice areas are material upcycling and prefabrication applied to affordable housing and urban activation. This specific area of research involves design-build as a form of practice and form of project delivery, especially related to prefabrication and modular construction. This follows from my design-build construction experience, transformations in construction methods, and my ongoing shipping container architecture projects and proposals. The overall goal of my research is to develop, test, and implement material use strategies and processes that reduce the cost of construction and use of material to affect the social and environmental impact of buildings.I serve as a Lectures Committee Member with other AIA members and staff, YAF representatives, and UCF representatives. I am in regular contact with the community of architects related to the governance and promotion of CityLab-Orlando, and actively collaborate with colleagues at UF main campus in Gainesville.

Adjunct Assistant Professor
In fall semester 2014 I began teaching at CityLab-Orlando, a University of Florida Graduate School of Architecture Program at the Center for Emerging Media in Orlando. I teach graduate Advanced Design Studio (G3, G6, G7, G8) and technical courses including Advanced Materials and Methods of Construction and Advanced Topics in Digital Architecture. Previously, I taught lower and upper division architectural design at the University of Florida School of Architecture; Design 3, 4, 5, 6 & 8. These are five and six credit hour classes. My student evaluations are above the department mean: https://evaluations.ufl.edu/results/instructor.aspx?ik=609086673 I began using a blog as a teaching tool in fall 2009 and I have continued with every subsequent studio; seven total. Blogs create a reflective learning environment, a history of project process and an electronic studio community allowing students and professors to extend teaching and learning beyond the moment and beyond the studio. The blog activity creates a informative structure (a catalog of sorts) within which I reflect on my assignments and outcomes. This is at a basic level a study of the relationship between the message originator and the message receiver. It is a reflection on the way I teach and how students learn. This is useful to me in a very practical way every day. An added benefit of the blog teaching method is that it reduces the need for plotted output. This saves tons of paper and ink, wear and tear on school equipment and time. It is a sustainable practice that benefits the School.*Software used and taught in studio courses: Autodesk AutoCad & AutoCAD Architecture, Revit, Vasari, Rhinocerus, V-Ray, SketchUp, SU Podium, Green Building Studio, EIS VE-Ware, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop & InDesign), MS Office (Excel), blogger/wordpress.
