“It’s Cancer.”These two words are so powerful they change the trajectory of anyone’s life and those around them. My late wife was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the 1990s. When I heard those words, my whole world started to crumble. Until then, I had the answers and the resources to deal with any challenge I had ever faced. But this? Suddenly I was completely helpless.The internet was new then, but I had nowhere else to turn. I recall endless online searches as my wife began her long, arduous series of treatments. How do I best help and support her? What will she be going through emotionally and physically? What should I do for our two young children as their worlds turned upside down?While I deeply loved my wife, I had to admit that caregiving just didn’t come naturally to this husband and father. And there weren’t many resources out there for men like me. So in her final years, I pushed to learn how to be the best caregiver possible.Since my wife lost her battle with cancer, I’ve had many heart-to-heart conversations with other men who were also unexpectedly called to care for loved ones with critical illnesses. Their stories often sounded much like mine. Clearly, there is a huge unmet need today that should be met.That’s why I founded Caring Men Global (CMG), a 501c3 nonprofit serving as a one-stop resource for men (and women too, of course) who suddenly find themselves caring for a loved one with cancer.CMG is designed to replace panic with empowerment, connecting caregivers with the most helpful resources available for their new role. These include educational materials and caregiver tools, the nearest cancer specialists and support groups, links to clinical trials, nutrition, and financial advice, and much more—all the resources in one place that I wish I’d had from the start of my wife’s diagnosis.After learning the hard way what cancer patients need most from their caregivers, it is my life’s mission and sincere hope that no one who hears the words “it’s cancer” will panic as I did, with no idea where to turn.
