Corkerhill, Glasgow

Responsible for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of ScotRail’s 48 x Class 156 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) fleet. In addition, this position was responsible for the Vehicle Presentation aspect of the entire First ScotRail Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) and DMU fleets (670 vehicles in total). This included ensuring compliance with the standards set out by Transport Scotland’s ‘SQUIRE’ (Service Quality) regime.

Haymarket Sprinter Depot

From April 2000 until January 2002, I held the position of Depot Production Engineer, Haymarket Depot in Edinburgh. This position was responsible for 120 Depot-based staff and 115 out-based ‘TrainCare’ staff. In addition to Level 5 maintenance activities, I was also responsible for the level 1-4 maintenance, repair and overhaul of ScotRail’s DMU fleet comprising as follows;12 x Class 150s, 40 x Class 158s & 26 x Class 170 Turbostar units.

Edinburgh Waverley & Glasgow Queen Street Stations

I was promoted in December 1995 to the position of ‘TrainCare Manager’, ScotRail, based at Waverley Station in Edinburgh. In this post I was directly responsible to the Head of Engineering, for Maintenance and Carriage Cleaning staff based at Edinburgh, Glasgow Queen Street, Perth, Stirling & Aberdeen Stations and Yoker and Ayr Townhead Depots (160 staff).From June 1998 to September 2000 I was also directly involved in the project-engineering management of the new ADtranz Turbostar Class 170/4 fleet, introduced onto ScotRail’s Inter City network between Scotland’s major cities, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness.

Corkerhill Depot, Glasgow

In 1993, I was appointed as ‘Safety & Services Manager’. During this time I was directly involved in the successful introduction of ‘BS 5750’ (ISO 9002) at Corkerhill Depot. My responsibilities included the preparation, review, implementation and monitoring of the local Safety, Quality & Environmental Management systems and the preparation of workplace and core task Risk Assessments.

Corkerhill Depot, Glasgow

In 1982 when I became a ‘time-served’ Electrician, I transferred to Corkerhill Depot in the south side of Glasgow, where I was to form part of a small maintenance team responsible for the maintenance and repair of Diesel Multiple Units. I was promoted to Maintenance Chargehand in November 1988, when Corkerhill Depot was allocated a fleet of Class 156 units.Promotion to the position of ‘Maintenance Supervisor’ was achieved in July 1991, where I became directly responsible for a team of multi-skilled maintenance personnel (30 staff).In 1992 a restructuring of the Company saw the Carriage Cleaning function coming under the control of the Engineering Department. This resulted in my promotion to ‘Shift Production Supervisor’, responsible for both Maintenance and Carriage Cleaning staff at Corkerhill Depot and Glasgow Queen Street Station (90 staff).

Eastfield Depot, Springburn, Glasgow

I served a recognised electrical engineering apprenticeship with British Railways Board, obtaining engineering skills to the Engineering Industry Training Board standards. After the initial first year of my apprenticeship which was ‘off the job’, being based at Eastfield Traction Maintenance Depot in Springburn, Glasgow, I gained experience carrying out maintenance/repairs to Main Line Diesel-Electric Locomotives (Class 47, 37, 27, 26, 25 & 08) and Diesel Multiple Units.
