I collaborated with Professor Herschel Rabitz’s lab and various members of Princeton’s faculty to research a novel application of cognitive computing for the analysis and control of complex systems at the molecular level. Our work included an examination of how high-dimensional model representation (HDMR) – a set of emergent mathematical techniques – can be used to improve cognitive reasoning platform efficiency and provide a way to represent reasoning as a complex dynamical system.

I worked with the Directorate to define the strategic scientific agenda in the areas of Enterprise Resilience Management with a focus on the resiliency and competitiveness of complex networks, critical infrastructure, and dynamical systems. My work included the application of Enterra Solutions' Enterprise Resilience Management Methodology™ to critical infrastructure and network assets. Additionally, I led the Institute for Advanced Study in Global Resiliency at the Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Technology as Executive Director.

I worked with the Software Engineering Institute team to co-create the patented Enterprise Resilience Management Methodology® (ERMM), a systems diagnostic methodology for the security, compliance, and performance management areas. This methodology creates a differentiated diagnosis of vulnerabilities in complex global networks and the requisite capabilities, processes, and methods for systemically managing and mitigating such risks.

Founded in 1998, IndustryNetworks, LLC is a supply chain technology company, where Stephen launched the first web-service enabled supply chain management system. At IndustryNetworks, Steve helped pioneer the field of comprehensive Web-based secure supply chain services, including Web-enabled offerings in sourcing, procurement, logistics and demand forecasting. The company’s clients included major public utilities and specialty chemical companies, amongst others.

I served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mercer Industrial Holdings, LLC, and its portfolio firm, Technical Coatings Industries, Inc. (TCI) — a specialty chemicals industry manufacturing company. TCI operated in the Caribbean basin, with clients across major oil and gas, aluminum manufacturing, governmental shipping, construction, and distribution industries. In my role as President and CEO, I created a revolutionary, web-based electronic supply chain management system for the paint and coatings industry.

I created a strategy and government affairs consultancy in Washington, D.C., while also building political action committees to ensure enactment of economic legislation. During this time, I served as economic development counselor for the U.S. Virgin Islands and crafted the Casino Control Act of 1992 for the territory. Additionally, I represented hospitality, manufacturing, entertainment, and technology industries on business development, strategic alliances, and other emergent business issues in the United States, China, Europe, and Africa.
