As a Spacecraft Controller I am responsible for the routine support and operation of the Avanti fleet of satellites by the execution of predefined operational procedures including the completion of all required documentation. On shift I act as point of contact in the control room for any external activities affecting mission support. As a Senior Controller I have the added responsibility for the mentoring and supervision of junior colleagues.I also support contingency and special operations both autonomously and under the control of Spacecraft Operations Managers and Engineers as well as simulation operations for procedure validation and exercises for newer spacecraft.

Responsibility as part of a small team for the support and operation of the Galileo constellation of satellites, executing predefined procedures to monitor and control the satellites in order to verify nominal status and react to anomalies 24hrs a day, 7 days a week

Responsibility for the operation of the main control room (MCR) systems so as to maintain the availability of the service links via satellite and landline via fibre on a 24/7 basis as part of a worldwide network, troubleshooting of anomalies and customer reported problems to do with the services provided (TV, Radio and data access). All documentation involved in new services, fault logs and anomaly reports.

I had responsibility for the operations and maintenance of a boundary layer wind tunnel including structure, fittings and test equipment. Installation, configuration and testing of scale models of proposed building developments, testing for pedestrian level winds and structural/cladding pressures using information from the project engineer including hot wire, high frequency force balance and smoke flow visualisation techniques. Test completion, initial QC and verification prior to raw data transfer to engineering for processing.

Advice to ground station operators/controllers of external agencies, industry, and/or ESTRACK ground stations on the support requirements for forthcoming satellite passes, monitoring progress of related station configurations. Coordinate the configuration of Network Data Interface Units (NDIU) deployed to ground stations or to AIV or launch sites Configuration of all logical data links needed to interconnect the respective mission control system and the required ground station or NDIU equipment; continuously monitor the status of these links and alert the Shift Co-ordinator in case of observed anomalies Provide mission control and/or spacecraft engineers with pre-pass ground station and OPSNET status reports; provide real-time updates in case status changes affect or may affect spacecraft or payload operations. Operation of the OPSNET; execute reconfigurations if and as required, impose traffic policing as needed. Quickly respond to any anomaly reported by station computers, network management systems, the NCTRS or other means. Advise the Shift Coordinator of the need for and implementation of appropriate measures of service restoration. Monitor and control the OCC's voice intercom system and its associated voice recorder; enforcing traffic discipline if necessary.Assist the Shift Coordinator in real-time trouble shooting and fault isolation activities and the preparation of operational messages (OMS) anomaly reports and other written documentation. Maintain updated log-files on operational events, ISDN utilization, and access to selected routers and LAN's at ground stations.

Second change of contractor at same location. Position was to operate and maintain two satellite tracking stations supporting a variety of military and civilian satellite programs mainly for the United States Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) as part of a worldwide network. These included classified programs, secure communications programs (UK and US) as well as GPS and relay systems. Maintenance included all subsystems from front-end to onward transmission to the end user and included a secure voice system.One of the first technicians to transition to the ARTS (Advanced Remote Tracking Station) from the older, manually configured station, this included some integration testing, software installation and update training.Operation and maintenance of a State of the Art Medium Terminal (SAMT) SatCom terminal involving the monitoring of input and output data multiplexing, demultiplexing and characterisation of data links for external users. I was also a cryptographic material custodian responsible for the security of cryptographic material and the loading and updating of cryptographic keying material. Authorised deputy to the shift leader with responsibility for the whole station outside normal working hours, responsible for delivering daily operations and maintenance briefings to station management and external liaison officers both military (UK and USAF) and civilian. I also took responsibility for the supervision and monitoring of on-the-job training for newer personnel.
