About Stephen Eittreim

I left Lamont-Doherty in 1975 after getting my PhD in 1970 with the thesis title: "Suspended Particulate Matter in the deep waters of the North American Basin." I worked with both John and Doc Ewing, and many others in the oceanography building, as well with Pierre Biscaye in Geochem. I moved to the USGS marine geology branch in Menlo Park, working for three years in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas on issues of offshore petroleum provinces. In 1983 I began a project to assess the continental margin structure and stratigraphy of the Wilkes Land margin of Antarctica, and in 1991 a joint US-Russian cooperative project to study a trans-Pacific geophysical transect along a flow-line of crustal generation. In 1994 I began a study of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a project to map the seafloor and assess the geologic processes active in the Sanctuary. I have been a member of the Lamont-Doherty Alumni Board ever since start of the unexecelled Lamont-Doherty alumni receptions at the western AGU in San Francisco. Through that event Lamont-Doherty has become famous not only for its extraordinary scientific prowess, a given at any AGU meeting, but also its social sensibilities.Specialties: marine geology and geophysics, seismic stratigraphy
