Seek demanding business projects/roles that matter and use my wide network of connections. Former international banking and VC professional with long and deep experience crossing what Geoffrey Moore insightfully calls "the chasm" in high tech. I prefer working with mezzanine round start-ups to IPO, and market-entry projects. Deeply familiar with the work on innovation and marketing of Clay Christensen, Geoffrey Moore, Steve Blank, etc. Worked internationally for Chase Germany, Citibank in three countries (in VC in two of them), and the Industrial Bank of Japan, plus three major consulting firms and manufacturer Nippon Motorola in telecom. Have held three interim CFO roles. Sophisticated early implementer/user of IT in banking and manufacturing. Very early and heavy user of financial modeling, accounting, database & graphics software at Citi, as well as a relationship manager involved in selling major Citi systems to other large banks. Also was an ops manager in Manila with 75 direct reports. While focused on due diligence on possible VC deals at Citi, also managed the creation of a relational database to track our $300MM VC portfolio consisting of our direct VC investments and limited partnership shares. I had also introduced sophisticated graphics software for our institutional investor presentations by the early 80s. And I also passed CFA I exam at the same time. (I didn’t sleep much.)Later marketing manager of Internet-based, Japanese financial info start-up and implementation expert in a Tokyo-based distance education effort. Most recently, recruited a board member, etc. for a European medtech company.Speak and read Japanese and German well, and can more than "find my way around" in half a dozen other languages. Educated at Caltech, HBS, Cornell, etc., with sufficient post-graduate work in "the school of hard knocks" to be a very realistic and mature team-player. Some think I have a wry sense of humor.Born and raised in Minneapolis. Married, three generally delightful sons.

Corporate Credit Trainee, Chase Manhattan Bank, GermanyChase Aug 1976 - Aug 1977New York, Ny, UsAttended this thoroughly bi-lingual (and often septi-lingual), year-long, international corporate credit officer training program. Our region included Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, Germany and Austria. We learned to do corporate credit analysis for all these countries, a demanding job. I translated six languages, ‘spread’ (converting various nation's accounting presentations to US GAAP Accounting), and then analyzed annual reports for companies in all these countries plus their S. American subsidiaries. Thus I translated from: SWEDISH, DUTCH, FRENCH, SPANISH, & PORTUGUESE as well as GERMAN to English. Fascinated, I wondered if I could do it in a Japanese, too...Years later, I could. -
Head Tutor (Tutorenleiter), Mathematics DeptUniversity Of Cologne Sep 1974 - Jul 1976Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, DeHead teaching asst teaching advance calculus and linear algebra to Math Majors in GERMAN for two academic years (taught 8 hours/week). Became truly fluent in German which I’d studied for 3 years in high school, worked on my French, and began trying to learn in Japanese. Also took classes, read very widely. Participated in a demanding “seminar” ( in the German sense) in which I made a 2-hour presentation on infinite dimensional matrices with continuous bands of eigenvalues (“spectra”) which occur in Quantum mechanics. Commended very highly by the professor. Also played the viola in a semi-professional orchestra (sponsored by Bayer Chemical) for 2 years and made concert tours to Switzerland, Belgium, and the UK, as well as in Germany. Was the “official translator” for the orchestra in England! -
Head Teaching AsstUniversity Of Cologne Sep 1974 - Jul 1976Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, De“Tutorenleiter” in the Mathematics department. I taught Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra IN GERMAN to math majors for 4 semesters (8 hours/week in class plus preparation and grading) and was promoted after my first semester to head tutor.Meanwhile I also studied math myself (largely in German) and was most proud of presenting (in German) a very difficult subject in functional analysis — continuous bands of Eigenvalues that occur in certain kinds of infinite dimensional matrices — in weekly seminar led by prof Norman Baisley at the beginning of my second year at the Uni Koeln. Norman Baisley (an American who’d previously worked in an American defense lab) was very impressed and encouraged me to generalize this to three dimensions.
