Stephen Fenner Email and Phone Number
I am a postgraduate student and now an R&D scientist, focusing on optical nanostructures, coming towards the end of their PhD and now looking to apply their research experience and adaptability to industry or further research. For my current PhD project, funded by BAE systems and undertaken at Southampton university, I have designed novel diffractive nanostructures for augment reality heads up displays, simulated these structures, fabricated them in a cleanroom and tested them via reflectometry. Work was undertaken to replicate these structures via nanoimprint lithography. This project has given be a broad set of design, theory and practical for optical systems and engineering, which I am looking forward to put to use. I have undertaken work as both part of a team and individually, as well as assisted in lecturing master students and maintained meetings with industrial contacts. I feel I have demonstrated great adaptability by gaining expertise in this field, after research in a previous field. I am now employed as a scientist in a Merck laboratory, creating and testing novel optically active films.Previously, I undertook work both as a lab internship and as a final project at Aston university. These projects focused on cell culturing and chromatography, as well as mutation design for genetic engineering, for the use of SMALPs and enzyme luciferase.

Research And Development ScientistMerck Electronics Aug 2024 - PresentEngland, United KingdomResearch and development position for developing, coating and testing novel optically active mixtures in chemistry lab. -
Postgraduate ResearcherUniversity Of Southampton Apr 2019 - PresentSouthampton, England, United KingdomWork done as part of the ongoing work to achieve a PhD, funded by BAE systems to look at the design of next generation augmented reality displays. The focus of the project was on the design and fabrication of novel diffractive nanostructures for near-to-eye augmented reality displays. Diffractive nanostructures were designed mathematically via MATLAB, simulated via optical software and fabricated using a cleanroom by myself. The nanostructures were tested via reflectometry system. Work was then undertaken to replicated these nanostructures via nanoimprint. -
Teaching AssistantUniversity Of Southampton Apr 2022 - Sep 2022Southampton, England, United KingdomAssisting a teaching computer lab on optical lithography. This involved answering student questions as well as marking and feedback writing. -
Laboratory AssistantAston University Jun 2017 - Sep 2017Birmingham, England, United KingdomA laboratory based placement alongside master and PhD students which focused on thesupervising professor’s ongoing project on the use of SMALPs (styrene maleic acid lipid particles)in the isolation of membrane proteins. This placement involved relatively independent lab work ina research orientated environment with daily documentation of undertaken lab work in a lab bookand processing of results. The lab techniques used during this placement included bacterial cellculturing, cell transformation, affinity chromatography, French press use, SDS-PAGE, Westernblotting and centrifugation based cell sample preparation -
Shop AssistantCats Protection Nov 2012 - Jul 2016Reading, England, United KingdomAn in-shop position initially involving organisation of books and judgements focusing on what tostock, facilitating development of organisation and decision-making skills. This later transitioned todealing with the public directly via processing transactions and assisting when the public neededhelp, teaching relevant communication skills and attitude. This position also commonly involveddeciding the price of objects donated to the store which was a position of responsibility essentialto the shop
