I am no longer employed or actively seeking re-employment, but I am interested in exploring opportunities which would benefit from my experience and skills. This could be paid (eg advisory/reviewing roles, NED, temporary contracts) or unpaid for worthwhile causes (eg volunteering or helping with STEM activities).For most of my career, I have led multi-disciplinary project teams to deliver innovative solutions for a wide range of markets – scientific instruments for life sciences research, manufacturing equipment for biotech, new methods of food processing, complex laboratory automation, test machines and various devices for healthcare. I represented R&D at board level, making strategic decisions about investment in new technologies and creating systems for optimising resources. Latterly I managed Operations at a small technology startup.I believe successful product development is all about risk management – the technical risk in being able to meet the requirements, within budget, and the commercial risk in launching a product that will delight customers. Good judgement of risk comes from experience and I have over 30 years of managing new product development so I provide technical leadership in R&D with confidence.

Up until September 2018 it was part of the TTP Group, when it was sold to Battery Ventures, a US private equity firm. As a key Board member, I led all new product development activity and managed the engineering resources, the IP portfolio and regulatory compliance. I grew the R&D team from 10 to 40 highly qualified engineers, scientists, technicians and designers, with full budgetary authority and responsibility.I instigated a stage-gate process for efficient New Product Development and provided oversight for NPD projects in liquid dispensing, sample storage, fluorescence cytometry and cryo electron microscopy.Following the takeover by Battery Ventures, the company was downsized and the Board rationalised, including making the Engineering Director role redundant. -

The system included numerous novel devices for automating chemistry processes, multiple robots, XRPD analysis and Raman spectrometers to provide high throughput screening of polymorphs and salts of drug candidates. As system architect for the Automated Synthesis Laboratory for Eli Lilly, I led the initiative to revolutionise productivity in medicinal chemistry through innovative automation.

Senior Project ManagerTtp Plc Jul 1996 - Sep 2003Cambridge, United KingdomTTP is an independent technology company where scientists and engineers collaborate to invent, design and develop new products and technologies.When Amgen wanted to scale up their EPO manufacturing capability and site it in Boulder, Colorado, I managed the project team for the design, build and installation of this large biotech facility. The system rotated and incubated 40,000 roller bottles for cell culture, and filled a space equivalent to 6 tennis courts.I was also the project manager and lead engineer for a novel automated storage system for frozen samples in pharma research (comPOUND), and associated products using pneumatic transfer technology. The product is still sold by TTP Labtech, and remains the fastest cherry-picking store for sample tubes. -
