Tenured associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine until 2022, and remains a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the Dean McGee Eye Institute.Founder, chairman, and chief medical officer of Lumata Health, an early-stage company focused on eliminating blindness by helping patients get the care they need in time. He founded Lumata after seeing many patients make their way to him only after losing their vision due to conditions that are highly treatable if caught in time and managed properly.Started a program almost thirty years ago to bring state of the art retinal care to American Indian communities throughout rural Oklahoma. Continues to see patients in those communities.Awarded the University Gold Medal for highest academic standing in chemistry as a University of Manitoba undergraduate, and graduated from medical school there in 1985. Ophthalmology residency at the University of Oklahoma’s Dean McGee Eye Institute, and retina fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, consistently ranked as the number one eye hospital in the nation. While there worked with J. Donald M. Gass, MD, described as one of the most significant figures to emerge in ophthalmology in the last 100 years, and the father of the medical retina subspecialty.Chaired the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) New Education Technology Committee from 1995 to 1999 during which time his team developed the AAO’s first website, hosting the AAO Annual meeting program.Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
