I spent nearly 30 years in the Royal Navy as an engineer. I saw action in the Falklands conflict (HMS Fearless), and was deployed in the sweeping up operations at the end of the first Gulf War. Here I was involved in the helicopter rapid roping operations from HMS Scylla tasked with intercepting and stopping drug and ammunition embargo breaking vessels, which proved highly exciting. As a front line marine engineer officer, I managed the ship staff aspects of the major refits of HMS Scylla and HMS Newcastle and led the engineering departments for extended deployments at sea in both ships. Later in my career I turned from poacher to gamekeeper and managed the project contracts for the MOD of the major refits of all three of the Invincible Class carriers, the T42 destroyer HMS Liverpool and other aspects of Frigate and Minor Warfare Vessel refitting in Rosyth. Also during my career I was lead officer at HMS Sultan for Hull systems and training. During this time I audited all operational, equipment and training requirements for the surface fleet regarding newly implemented regulations for lifting appliances and MarPol (Marine Pollution Prevention). For this I worked closely with the Fleet HQ and MOD Naval Design Authority to develop operational procedures in the fleet and to identify new equipment requirements. From this, my small team of trainers designed and implemented the training required to meet the new requirements for the fleet.Qualifications gained include a Metalwork apprenticeship ONC as a Marine Engineering Artificer, a BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering as a Marine Engineer Officer, and graduation from an MA based Joint Staff Course in Politics and Military Doctrine as a Staff Officer.Having enjoyed a great career that took me to many places around the world, I retired as a Commander with a real desire to take up teaching and rediscover my passion for photography. Ten years on I believe this was a great decision!
