CurrentMicrobiology Analyst - Bacteriology & Mycology
My current role involves analysis of samples from various veterinary clinics. I perform various different types of testing on different agar plates including sheep blood and Macconkey agar. In addition I also perform Antibiotic sensitivity testing on certain types of bacteria. When testing is complete the correct bacteria is identified via colour of colonies or through a gram stain. Results are then entered into a LIMS system and clients are given the results and what appropriate action to take.I am involved in helping and teaching practical classes for the vet students at Glasgow University for example showing them how certain tests are performed and bacterial species identification.
Microbiology Analyst
Conduct water and seafood testing for various types organisms, ranging fromu E.Coli to Legionella using microbiology and chemistry testing methods in an UKAS accredited laboratory.Perform Listeria and Salmonella PCR testing on samples.Using a LIMS system to log, store and report sample results to the respective client. In addition obtaining water samples from shipping vessels and coordinating with shipping crew to make sure correct areas are being tested.
Analyst
This position at Biooutsource helped me gain experience of working in a GMP enviroment within a laboratory. I have further improved my understanding of ELISA methodology in this role. In addition this requires an excellent understanding of how ELISA's are performed and putting these methods into action by performing a wide and varied range of different ELISA's.Many of these ELISA's are extremely complex and very precise in their layout so a good understanding is pivotal in being able to perform ELISA's. This is critical as each test has strict guidelines and the results of QC's and samples must fall within a certain range.Furthermore due to the sample preparation, it is extremely important that I am well organised and work to a strict schedule to make sure the correct incubation times are adhered to and that GMP standards are met.
Serology Technician
Having been in this role for over 2 years I learned a great deal in the understanding of ELISA methodology and techniques which have consequently led to improvement in my ability at performing ELISA tests e.g. obtaining low C.V’s etc. I tested between 10 and 15 different poultry infections using the ELISA method. The most common tests I carried out were Mycoplasma Gallisepticum/ Mycoplasma Synoviae (Mg/Ms) and Avian Influenza/Egg Drop Syndrome (AI/EDS).I have experience of using different types of ELISA kits such as Biocheck, Trop-Bio, Idexx and Symbiotics. Using these different ELISA kits has helped improve my performance due to each kit have strict controls that must be met in order for the test to be valid.
